Madame Vice President: Mistress Condi’s inevitable future

Standard

Given Rudy Giuliani’s philandering and subsequent marriage to a whore and John McCain’s serial apostasy, it has left GOP voters in a real quandary.   The only alternative is Multiple Choice Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts.  Gov. Romney is a real piece of work with a history of being a political weather vane.  With multiple positions on Abortion and gay rights, he’ll say whatever is necessary to win. With a successful business career behind him and a fortune worth an estimated quarter billion, he felt there was only one thing left to do-become President.

His Governorship of Massachusetts was a four-year try-out for the Republican nomination for President.  He missed no opportunity to pander to the reactionary base of the GOP with his opposition to Abortion, Stem-cell research, and Same-sex marriage.

Handsome, telegenic, and smooth, it has been said that Romney looks like a President straight from central casting.  He has been caught in multiple lies, the most famous of which are the tall tales about being a hunter/sportsman.  The problem is that his lying is so effortless and smooth that he evokes nostalgia about the “great communicator,” Ronald Reagan.

Romney has begun to peak in the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire and has already outdistanced his rivals in the fundraising department having raised over $ 20 million in the first quarter.  The polls have also detected a widespread disaffection in the GOP primary electorate about the contenders and there could be an opening.   Name the last time we didn’t know who the GOP nominee would be by now-exactly.

This year is different and it shall be competitive for a change, however, when it is all said and done, Romney will win the nomination and it will be up to him to lead a moribund and scandal scarred party into battle with the Democratic Party looking ascendant.

Next summer, after the Democratic nomination is all wrapped up, we’ll go through a tawdry and insulting little melodrama as Queen Hillary decides with whom she’ll share the throne.  As I’ve said previously, I doubt she’ll choose Barack Obama because the Queen doesn’t like to be overshadowed and certainly doesn’t like to be challenged.   As of this writing, Barack has already pressed the Queen’s back to the wall on the fundraising front and that s*** means war.  My feeling today is that Hillary will rescue some white Senator or Congresswoman from obscurity like Mary Landrieu or Blanche Lincoln to form the first estrogen powered ticket.

Let’s face facts, Hillary has a lock on women voters-particularly women of color.  Being in the majority has its benefits and Democratic women far outnumber Democratic men. If Hillary wins this thing, it will because of her advantage among women 45 and over.  Moreover, it will also be because black women over 45 voted for her.   Hillary has no compunction using the votes of our sistahs to create another all-white ticket and calling it diverse.

I don’t care what she says, she don’t feel OUR pain, Y’all.  Mississippi College School of law professor Angela Mae Kupenda wrote provocatively in her Boston College Third World Law Journal article, For White Women: Your Blues Ain’t Like Mine, But We All Hide Our Faces and Cry,she wrote, “There is no wonder that there is conflict between some white women and some black women.  Black and white women have many unresolved issues surrounding the issue of race, generally, and race and sexuality, specifically.  Buried inside of some white women may be hatred toward black women because of their white men.”

“During slavery while some white men regarded blacks as animals, they forced black women to have sexual relations with them…Generally, black women and white women appear to be unable to discuss openly—how white women must have felt knowing their white men were desiring black women on the one hand and calling them animals and n___s on the other.  Instead of resenting their white male mates, white women took their anger out on their black female slaves.  They were unable, it seems, to face that their holy mates for life were willing to sell their own flesh and blood as if their offspring were livestock.  So instead of facing this cruelty and naming it for what it was, many white women silently participated in the rape and attacks on black womanhood and actively joined in the systematic destruction of black womanhood and the selling of children with the faces and blood of their husbands and sons, and consequently their own blood.”

When one really examines our politics in this country, plantation metaphors are always appropriate whether it is an examination of gender, race, or class.   Maryland Lt. Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by choosing a white Republican over qualified black democrats, and it seems to me that Queen Hillary is bound and determined to do the same by passing over Obama. She’ll do it because as Professor Kupenda has written, “White women too are at an intersection.  They find themselves in the position of both the oppressor and the oppressed.  At one juncture, they benefit by participating in the system manufactured by a racist society.  At the other, they suffer as a result of gender oppression from a patriarchal and supremacist society.”

Hillary’s too caught up in the plantation nexus between oppressor and oppressed and will choose gender over race as most white women do. That’s when Romney will pounce and rescue from the ashbin of history, Dubya’s favorite foreign minstrel.

I am a packrat, and have lived my life with the motto: There are just some things that you don’t throw away.  You name it, and I’ve kept it.  I rarely delete e-mail. I have most of my college textbooks and save every piece of campaign literature and paraphernalia, I get. The same could be said of the white power structure and its collection of useful House Negroes.  Some House Negroes are just too handy to be discarded.  Especially Dubya’s little plantation mistress.

Mistress Condi will be sold to another Massa to save the Plantation for the party.  She’ll go willingly and provide her “services” like the good Negress she was trained to be.

Rev. Jerry Falwell dies at 73

Standard

HAT TIP: By SUE LINDSEY, Associated Press Writer

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who founded the Moral Majority and built the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said. He was 73.

Ron Godwin, the university’s executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. “CPR efforts were unsuccessful,” he said.

Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said Falwell “has a history of heart challenges.”

“I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast,” Godwin said. “He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him unresponsive.”

Falwell had survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was hospitalized for two weeks with what was described as a viral infection, then was hospitalized again a few weeks later after going into respiratory arrest. Later that year, doctors found a 70 percent blockage in an artery, which they opened with stents.

Falwell credited his Moral Majority with getting millions of conservative voters registered, electing Ronald Reagan and giving Republicans Senate control in 1980.

“I shudder to think where the country would be right now if the religious right had not evolved,” Falwell said when he stepped down as Moral Majority president in 1987.

The fundamentalist church that Falwell started in an abandoned bottling plant in 1956 grew into a religious empire that includes the 22,000-member Thomas Road Baptist Church, the “Old Time Gospel Hour” carried on television stations around the country and 7,700-student Liberty University. He built Christian elementary schools, homes for unwed mothers and a home for alcoholics.

He also founded Liberty University in Lynchburg, which began as Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971.

Liberty University’s commencement is scheduled for Saturday, with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the featured speaker.

In 2006, Falwell marked the 50th anniversary of his church and spoke out on stem cell research, saying he sympathized with people with medical problems, but that any medical research must pass a three-part test: “Is it ethically correct? Is it biblically correct? Is it morally correct?”

Falwell had once opposed mixing preaching with politics, but he changed his view and in 1979, founded the Moral Majority. The political lobbying organization grew to 6.5 million members and raised $69 million as it supported conservative politicians and campaigned against abortion, homosexuality, pornography and bans on school prayer.

Falwell became the face of the religious right, appearing on national magazine covers and on television talk shows. In 1983, U.S. News & World Report named him one of 25 most influential people in America.

In 1984, he sued Hustler magazine for $45 million, charging that he was libeled by an ad parody depicting him as an incestuous drunkard. A federal jury found the fake ad did not libel him, but awarded him $200,000 for emotional distress. That verdict was overturned, however, in a landmark 1988 U.S. Supreme Court decision that held that even pornographic spoofs about a public figure enjoy First Amendment protection.

The case was depicted in the 1996 movie “The People v. Larry Flynt.”

With Falwell’s high profile came frequent criticism, even from fellow ministers. The Rev. Billy Graham once rebuked him for political sermonizing on “non-moral issues.”

Falwell quit the Moral Majority in 1987, saying he was tired of being “a lightning rod” and wanted to devote his time to his ministry and Liberty University. But he remained outspoken and continued to draw criticism for his remarks.

Days after Sept. 11, 2001, Falwell essentially blamed feminists, gays, lesbians and liberal groups for bringing on the terrorist attacks. He later apologized.

In 1999, he told a evangelical conference that the Antichrist was a male Jew who was probably already alive. Falwell later apologized for the remark but not for holding the belief. A month later, his National Liberty Journal warned parents that Tinky Winky, a purple, purse-toting character on television’s “Teletubbies” show, was a gay role model and morally damaging to children.

Falwell was re-energized after moral values issues proved important in the 2004 presidential election. He formed the Faith and Values Coalition as the “21st Century resurrection of the Moral Majority,” to seek anti-abortion judges, a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage and more conservative elected officials.

Sharpton vs. Romney

Rev. Al Sharpton Rally @ For Darfur 30 Apr 2006189Gov. Mitt Romney (MA) - Friday Morning

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and civil rights activist Al Sharpton traded angry, racially charged accusations yesterday, with Romney alleging that Sharpton had uttered “bigoted” comments about Mormonism.

On the campaign trail in Iowa, Romney was asked about Sharpton’s comment during a debate Monday that “those of us who believe in God” will defeat Romney. The former Massachusetts governor told reporters that such a comment “shows that bigotry still exists in some corners.”

Sharpton angrily denied Romney’s charge in a telephone interview yesterday, and he accused Romney of stoking a verbal war with him to gain support among conservatives.

Sharpton said his comments have been taken out of their original context — a debate about religion with journalist Christopher Hitchens, who Sharpton said had suggested that Mormonism once advocated segregation.

“Attacking me, not Hitchens, shows [Romney] is playing politics,” Sharpton said. “What is bigoted about asking . . . about a denomination based on racism?”

Sharpton called on Romney to address whether the Mormon Church ever supported segregation. “He needs to clarify the truth or non-truth of what I was presented,” Sharpton said.

Richard N. Ostling, co-author of “Mormon America,” said the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as the church is formally known, never officially sanctioned segregation. But until 1978, he said, the church barred any male with “African blood” from being a “priest,” a designation given to males over the age of 12.

“That pertains to not only holding church office but performing very routine functions and has afterlife implications,” Ostling said. “That teaching goes back at least to 1849.”

The back-and-forth highlights Romney’s sensitivity on issues relating to his faith. If elected, he would become the first Mormon president, which he plays down on the campaign trail.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said Sharpton owes Romney an apology “for the initial attack.” He added: “We are simply responding to a gratuitous attack from Reverend Sharpton. It’s sad that he would continue to target any fellow American on the issue of faith.”

Romney has praised his church’s decision to “ordain African Americans,” Madden said. “He has spoken very sincerely about how great a day he thought that was. He is somebody who is absolutely against discrimination.”

Joe Scarborough needs to put down his crack pipe

Standard

Proving that he is unequivocally on crack, Scarborough’s latest commentary urges Republican Presidential Candidates to embrace and praise the successes of President Bush in tonight’s debate.   WTF would those be?  Bankrupting our nation to subsidize the wealth of the wealthiest one percent?  Putting the mess back in Mesopotamia?  Stealing the Presidency through the most racist scheme to nullify black votes in the history of the cosmos?   Brownie?   Making the world safe for torture, secret rendition and domestic wiretapping? Failing to raise the minimum wage for a decade? Just what in the Hell are his successes, other than managing to not be impeached, convicted, removed and extradited to the Hague to face a war crimes tribunal?

Illegal Immigrant fixation jeopardizes native born citizens access to health care

 According to California Health Advocates:

Individuals seeking care through Medicaid beginning on July 1, 2006 will be required under federal law to show proof of U.S. citizenship — such as a birth certificate, passport or another form of identification. The new requirement will apply to all Medicaid applications submitted after July 1, 2006, as well as all applications to renew Medicaid coverage. (In most cases, Medicaid beneficiaries must renew their coverage every six months.) This means that in the first six to twelve months, states will have to check citizenship documents for more than 50 million beneficiaries.

This requirement was included in the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which President Bush signed into law earlier this year. The provision’s intent is to prevent undocumented immigrants from claiming to be citizens in order to receive benefits only provided to legal residents. Under federal law, undocumented immigrants can receive only emergency care through Medicaid. Many advocates and health care professionals are concerned that with the new citizenship requirements, millions of Medicaid beneficiaries will not be able to produce the needed documentation and will have difficulty receiving health services.

According to a report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), the people most at risk for losing their Medicaid because of not having the required documents include the following:

Some 12 million African Americans, including 800,000 elderly African Americans.

These people will be subject to the new requirement between July 2006 and June 2007, and are at particular risk of having their Medicaid coverage delayed, denied, or canceled because many elderly African Americans have no birth certificate.

Many were born in a time when racial discrimination in hospital admissions prevented mothers from giving birth at a hospital. As a result, their births often were not officially registered, and no birth certificates were given. (CBPP cites one study that estimates that about one in five African Americans born in the 1939-1940 period lack a birth certificate.)

Adults without a high-school diploma, adults living in rural areas (9 percent of both groups reported that they lack the required documents, according to CBPP survey), and senior citizens aged 65 or older (7 percent of whom reported in a CBPP survey that they lack the required documents); People who have a sudden medical emergency and need Medicaid coverage immediately but cannot get their documents quickly; People who are homeless, mentally ill, or suffering from dementia or a disease like Alzheimer’s; People who are in nursing homes or are severely disabled and would have difficulty getting access to their birth certificate; and People whose personal documents have been destroyed by disasters such as fires, hurricanes or earthquakes.

Besides putting millions of Medicaid beneficiaries in jeopardy of loosing their coverage, this new requirement also puts up another barrier for people newly applying for Medicaid. Obtaining these documents, for those who do not have them, can take substantial time and costs money.

When Grandmama is denied Medicaid benefits, or thrown out of her nursing home, or stuck with an astronomical Hospital bill she can’t possibly pay, perhaps then we’ll see the insanity and the racism behind this so-called illegal immigrant fixation.  The same racism that brought us here in chains is the same racism that forces folks to immigrate to this country because the global economic system makes it impossible to stay at home and feed their children.

I fail to understand why smart black people can’t see the racism that plays out in the global economy.   I fail to understand why smart black people can’t see the subterfuge playing out here. This “documentation” scheme is nothing more than a backdoor, draconian and racist plan to deny medicaid benefits to legal U.S. Citizens whose citizenship has never been questioned.

My grandmamas are all in their 70’s now and I will be damned if they or anybody else in my family is gonna be looking for some stupid-damn birth certificate to get the medical care they need.  My father’s Mama is 74 and she still works.  My mother’s Mama is 78 and a retired nurse for the VA.  If I have to go hunting for a fu#*in’ birth certificate for a retired federal government employee-somebody’s gonna hafta die.

Hillary’s Nixonian power grab: Resistance is futile

Standard

Anticlimactically, and antiseptically Hillary Rodham Clinton, announced the long anticipated formation of her Hillary ClintonPresidential Exploratory Committee. Bathed in soft light and looking deceptively relaxed in a tastefully appointed sitting room, she officially launched her effort to retake the dynastic throne of American Imperial power from the most venal and corrupt regime to preside over the executive branch of our government.

This moment in American politics would never have been possible without the complicity and mendacity of the Bush dynasty. Their lust for power, subversion of the electoral process, and manipulation of divisive social wedge issues is without compare to any regime in the last century. They have managed to steal the Presidency from the American people and place it in the service of their plutocratic and imperial designs in a manner, which has polarized the nation and the world as never before.

Over $20 million in book advances and $29 million in speaking fees have placed the Clintons at the pinnacle of the American class structure. They are uniquely positioned to benefit from that status to reap the benefits of 30 years of catering to wealth and corporate power. As previously quoted, Michael Parenti has opined that “American capitalism represents more than just an economic system; it is an entire cultural and social order, a plutocracy-that is, a system of rule by and for the rich-for the most part.”

Speaking to the Council on Foreign Relations, Hillary has said “I was one who supported giving President Bush the authority, if necessary, to use force against Saddam Hussein. I believe that that was the right vote. I have had many disputes and disagreements with the administration over how that authority has been used, but I stand by the vote to provide the authority because I think it was a necessary step in order to maximize the outcome that did occur in the Security Council with the unanimous vote to send in inspectors.”

The war on Iraq is just another in a long line of resource wars intended to cement our economic, political and military hegemony by controlling the second largest oil reserves in the world. Supporting it is a Machiavellian calculation meant to maintain political viability for a Presidential bid.

The political persona of Hillary Rodham Clinton is, in my mind reminiscent of Richard Nixon. They share the same bedeviling complexity, intellect, dogged determination, and unmatched ability to polarize the American people. The fear and loathing they have collectively engendered is identical and their methodical pursuits of the presidency are eerily similar.

Theodore White’s classic series of books on the “The Making of the President” began in 1960 and they continued in 1964, 1968, and ended in 1972. His 1968 volume is particularly instructive in framing the political environment facing Nixon, and now, Hillary.

Official portrait of President Richard Nixon.

“[Hillary] is neither a conservative nor a liberal; [she] is a centrist. And it was, retrospectively, as a centrist that [she] faced the succession of tactical problems which presented themselves in [her] takeover of the [Democratic] Party in [2008].

The situation was clear as early as January of the year: The country was torn, the consensus of [Bush] had dissolved, the administration had lost the confidence of the American people, the apparently hopeless war went on. The situation insisted on alternative national leadership. Historically and practically, the alternative had to be a candidate of the [Democratic] Party. But the [Democratic] party was also split. How, then, to capture the [Democratic] Party? More specifically-how was [Hillary] to capture the party without tearing it apart.”

… “Cherishing [Hillary] as they did, the [Democratic] leaders cherished victory more. The object of politics is to gain power; and in this year of opportunity they could not afford to squander the chance on a [polarizing] loser. Thus, the first tactical problem of the [Hillary] camp was to erase… “the loser’s image.”

This was accomplished in the same manner as her first foray in New York: with overwhelming force. Her 2006 campaign was an arrogantly lavish, imperial crusade to crush her GOP opponent and to slay the image of a loser. Her 67% landslide victory was a personal triumph and the perfect talking point to deflate naysayers fixated on electability.

The United States is a hopelessly right-wing super power that reserves unto herself the prerogative of ruling the world and crushing those that stand in defiance. It needs a ruler that understands this inconvenient truth and Hillary Rodham Clinton relishes the opportunity to wield that enormous, tyrannical power in her own right, for her own ends. In furtherance of that goal, she has assembled a disciplined team of political mercenaries charged with creating a war machine tasked to advancing her candidacy ruthlessly and efficiently.

Borg Queen

Politically, Hillary resembles the Borg Queen of Star Trek the Next Generation. She leads a race of cybernetically enhanced humanoids more machine than human, which is bound together by one ideologically neo-liberal consciousness dedicated to the destruction of any democratic constituency group by forcible assimilation into the Clinton Democratic Leadership Council collective. Senator Clinton’s campaign mantra could easily become: resistance is futile.

The Presidential Primary and Caucus selection process is rigged to benefit the acceptable establishment frontrunner(s). Anybody who hasn’t been under a rock for the last 25 years understands this. I have actively watched and participated before I was able to legally vote. I remember reading USA Today religiously every Tuesday at twelve to track Jesse Jackson’s progress in the Primaries. At sixteen, I remember pointlessly canvassing neighborhoods in Nebraska for Jackson.

At twenty, as a member of a group of Young Democrats, we campaigned for Bob Kerrey, our U.S. Senator in the South Dakota Primary. The event was a forgettable appearance in the dead of winter. The venue was a barn in the seeming middle of nothing on the outskirts of a town whose name I have forgotten. New Hampshire was over and everyone skipped Iowa because of Iowa Senator Harkin’s candidacy. Three candidates attended, Bill Clinton, Bob Kerrey, and Irvine California Mayor Larry Agran. If someone had told me that two Presidents were in the room, I would have said they were Bill and Bob, not Bill and Hill.

The place was packed to the rafters and the Kerrey contingent was tasked with walking in front the hay bales in front of the podium with Kerrey’s banner from right-to-left as he was speaking. After finishing, we children sat down on the floor. Bill was the last to speak and as he ended, we all rose to our feet. Instinctively, he busted a move toward me with his hand outstretched, catching me off-guard as the cameras flashed all about. I looked and felt ridiculous, clad in overalls with a sweater, and played out Jheri curl, cut to make me look like a black Gumby. I should have known then that Daddy Bush was toast.

Before that, I had been in the midst of the crowd as Agran spoke and spied Hillary listening attentively. She wore her tresses long and shapelessly, pulled back with a black headband. Hillary is a small woman and she looked like a white AKA attired in a black, green, and pink skirt suit. She listened in a way that conveyed power and authority. Her 60 Minutes moment had already made her famous as the ultimate political wife.

There are formidable obstacles to her success and one mainstream contender in the way: Barack Obama. He is being led around by the nose by a rump group of DLC dissidents. They think they have a winning vehicle to ride to imperial power, but, as Bill said to Hillary as quoted in “The Agenda”, “We’re going to keep on going,” he said to her one day. “They’re never going to stop us.”

Indeed, as Susan Estrich, author of “The Case for Hillary Clinton” has written, “The rules have done just what they were supposed to. Since 1980, the candidates with the most money, the best organization-the ones who were supposed to win-have indeed won.” What I didn’t know about the Clintons back in the day was the depth of their political experience and their knowledge of Presidential politics from the ground up. After having run Texas for McGovern in 1972, lost a race for Congress in 1974, and gotten Bill elected Attorney General in 1976, Hillary ran Indiana for Carter’s campaign the same year and was appointed to the Administration. Two years later, they were Governor. Ain’t nobody currently in the running that can rival this couple’s political acumen or organization. Nobody. They have been at this for damn near forty years and they’re good at it.

There is no device or subterfuge that they haven’t utilized to gain or maintain power. Impeachment was essentially about the GOP’s realization of the Clintons collective talent. They had to be besmirched and tarnished in order to seize the Presidency back again. When common sense fails, as it often does in our right-wing society, they will extend a sop to our baser instincts like executing a black, brain-damaged man, or launching a cruise missile strike on a Sudanese Aspirin factory to strike at the terrorists harboring fictitious chemical weapons. Thus, executing the classic “Wag the Dog” scenario.

According to Joe McGinnis, author of “The Selling of the President 1968″, “Politics, in a sense, has always been a con game. The American voter, insisting upon his belief in a higher order, clings to his religion, which promises another, better life; and defends passionately the illusion that the men (and women) he chooses to lead him are of finer nature than he. It has been traditional that the successful politician honor this illusion. To succeed today, [she] must embellish it. Particularly if [she] wants to be President.” Hillary’s media team, like Nixon’s will create a skillfully managed and focus grouped assault on our senses.

We will be inundated with Mother Hillary who cares about children. We will be inundated with Warrior Hillary who votes for a bogus war and retracts her support when public opinion turns. Lastly, we will be treated to Professor Hillary, who will inundate us with wonky and incremental initiatives that taken together, don’t seem very threatening but intelligent and moderate.

The end result of this will be the election of a President, along with another forgettable white Vice President dedicated to the same focused grouped policy mush that allows the status-quo to remain intact. Resistance may be futile, but we must try anyway.

Keith Ellison getting Goode at one-upsmanship

Standard

Congressman Keith Ellison, once again showing the progressive savvy that got him elected to Congress over a gaggle of others, was sworn in yesterday on Thomas Jefferson’s Quran, affirming his faith and underscoring the religious tolerance of one of our nation’s most distinguished and intellectual founding father’s.  With this act of quiet dignity, Keith Ellison has proven himself to be a class act and an above average politician that understands the game of one-upsmanship.

Attacked for his Muslim faith again and again by a triumvirate of wingnuts: Glenn Beck, Dennis Praeger, and finally Virginia Congressman Virgil Goode, Ellison’s statesmanlike defiance reveals them as the bigots they are.  Ellison then went for the kill on the house floor as he and Dennis Kucinich sidled up to Goode and shook hands with a man I regard as nothing more than a Klansman with a title.

Below, Congressman Goode takes the oath of office.  But seriously…

Goode wrote a constituent and said “I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran.” The only thing missing was a line that said “Segregation now, Segregation Tomorrow, Segregation Forever” and a passing reference to the evils of race mixing.  With examples like Virgil Goode and the media acceptance of his racism, it is amazing that more people don’t get on the “Goode foot.”

Keith Olbermann: Kerry doesn’t need to apologize to the troops, Dubya does

Standard

part II

“There is tonight no political division in this country that he and his party will not exploit , nor have not exploited; no anxiety that he and his party will not inflame. There is no line this president has not crossed-nor will not cross-to keep one political party in power. He has spread any and every fear among us in a desperate effort to avoid that which he most fears-some check, some balance against what has become not an imperial, but a unilateral presidency. “

And now t is evident that it no longer matters to him whether that effort to avoid the judgement of the people is subtle and nuanced or laughably transparent. Sen. John Kerry called him out Monday.  He did it two years too late…Senator Kerry , as you well know, spoke at a college in Southern California. With bitter humor he told the students  that  he had been in Texas the day before, that President Bush used to live in that state, but that now he lives in the state of denial.

“He said the trip had reminded him about the value of education-that “if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework, and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,” The Senator, in essence called Mr. Bush stupid…And Mr. Bush and his minions responded by appearing to be too stupid to realize that they had been called stupid. They demanded Kerry apologize to the troops in Iraq. And so he now has…Thus, the president will now begin to the apologies he owes our troops, right?”

“This President must apologize to the troops for having suggested , six weeks ago, that the chaos in Iraq, the death and the carnage, the slaughtered Iraqi civilians and the dead American service personnel, will , to history, “look like just a comma.”

“This president must apologize to the troops because the intelligence he claims led us into Iraq proved to be undeniably wrong.  This president must apologize to the troops for having laughed about the failure of that intelligence at a banquet while our troops were in harms way. This president must apologize to the troops because the streets of Iraq were not strewn with flowers and its residents did not greet them as liberators. This president must apologize to the troops because his administration ran out of “plan” after barely two months. This president must apologize to the troops for getting 2,815 of them killed. This president must apologize for getting this country into a war without a clue.”

Damn, Keith is good.

Senator Harold Ford, Jr ?

Standard

With less than two weeks to go, Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. is in the homestretch of a race that has been the culmination of his ambitions for many years.  He continues to parry and thrust effectively in the battle against his GOP nemesis Bob Corker, the former Mayor of Chattanooga, TN.

We’ve heard much about an ad run by the RNC that links Ford tounge and cheek with a white “playboy bunny”  who isn’t wearing any visible clothing.  I laughed out loud when I saw this ad and give a gold star to its creators.   The ad is a masterpiece of Republican deception that tills the soil of white racial fears very effectively.  It beautifully mixes fears of miscegenation with staple GOP wedge issues in a way that is both funny and memorable.

There have been shouts from both the Corker campaign that asked the party to take down the ad and the Ford campaign which maintains the ad hits way below the belt and is beneath the dignity of a Senate race.  I must disagree with both on this score.  This is what you get when you date outside of your race, which I of course have no problem with.  He is 36, single, and looking.  He knows that he is expected to marry some accomplished sistah from a prominent boogie family. He just ain’t in no hurry to settle down and enjoys playing the field and whoever throws herself in his general direction.

Given the fact that young Harold is a corporate whore of legendary prowess and a demagogue willing to mine the ignorance and prejudice of the electorate advocating for “abstinence” programs he knows damn well don’t work and put kids lives at risk, and against “amnesty” for illegal immigrants, which is code for anti-Hispanic prejudice, I have no problem with the Republicans attacking him for being too friendly with nubile young white women.

The Washington Post article linked to above has an excellent little vignette about a sick, rural, unemployed, white Republican in his late fifties who is “willing” to consider voting for Ford, but is similarly unwilling to consider Ford marrying his daughter.  People like this fascinate democratic strategists to no end.  They build whole campaigns around appealing to these people and ignore black and brown folks.  I know that Harold won’t make the same mistake, he’ll roll out all the usual local-boy-makes-good-bromides to rally the black vote.  Ultimately, I think Ford wins because he has made the effort to talk to some of these rural white voters up close and personal and lays it on as thick as possible speaking of faith and values and whatnot.

His poll numbers are excellent and he stands a better than even chance to win this race and compete for the brass ring of the Presidency against Barack Obama.  The question is: who will Black America choose?

GOP wedge issue du jour: Illegal Immigration

Standard

Massachusetts GOP Lt. Gov Kerry Healey has another racist wedge issue ad out bashing her African American opponent Deval Patrick for his stand on in-state tuition and drivers licences for Illegal Immigrants.  Scarlet O’Healey is intent on exhausting the right wing treasure trove of wedge issues before the campaign concludes.  This bigotfest against immigrants, mostly directed at undocumented mexicans, is a popular device this year for the trust fund racists in the republican party.

Being a Florida native, you’d think that Scarlet O’Healey would be used to Latino’s and their manifold contributions to our nation.  There are over 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States and they ain’t going nowhere.  When the campaign ends and the histrionics die down, all of them will still be here trying to make a living and raising their children.

Anybody want to put down a bet that Kerry has Latino help in her expensive mansion estate in Beverly?  How bout’ the $2 million dollar vacation home in Vermont? Or their vacation home in Florida? No takers?  Damn. Silly rabbit, tricks are for kids down in the polls by double digits

Also today, the California GOP announced that it is demanding the withdrawal of their Congressional candidate Tan D. Nguyen, also an immigrant, for conspiring with his campaign staff to send a deceptive filer “threatening Hispanic immigrant voters with arrest”.  He was running against Loretta Sanchez, a Democratic Congresswoman from Orange County, formerly a GOP bastion changed by an influx of immigration.  I knew God was still on the throne when she defeated Congressman Bob Dornan, a racist wingnut to the tenth power, in 1996.
