A Vice President Of Color

I’ve been turning over in my mind for a few years the efficacy of organizing a group of dedicated activists with the goal of forcing a person of color onto the next ticket at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.  I’m a history buff and I never cease to be underwhelmed by the inadequacies of past Presidents and their stunning lack of commitment to fundamental fairness, equality, and democracy.

Republican leaders during the disputed election of 1876 sacrificed every single constitutional right of black folks to hold onto the power of the White House.  They ended reconstruction, the brief period in southern history where the social, political, and economic rights of black folks were respected. We could vote, hold office and were relatively free to go into any sphere of endeavor. Twenty two African Americans were elected to Congress during this period.

Most of our black colleges were created during this time, and our people prospered as much as could be attained in an agricultural based economy.  Lincoln’s action in issuing the Emancipation Proclamation , and the subsequent Reconstruction Amendments abolishing slavery, guaranteeing equal protection, and the right to vote, earned the allegiance of a grateful critical mass of black folks that endured for over 75 years.  The experiment ended in a spate of violence and murder.

A repressive regime of racist segregation was pressed upon us and we were exploited as if slavery never ended.  It all came crashing down after a small, dedicated band of activists decided that they were sick and tired of being sick and tired.  They joined with church groups, organized labor, and civil rights groups across racial lines to demand justice.  They liberated the nation  and blazed a trail that others are still following.

Today that same regime of repressive racist exploitation burdens the majority of the World’s people of color. Our government is a key instrument in maintaining the tyranny.  The time has come again to do something big, and organize our way into wielding some real power for a righteous purpose. It’s time to organize our friends and allies into a political force to bring about some needed world-wide, political changes.

The lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions is at stake.  Isn’t it time to make a mark on the Presidency instead of letting the handmaidens of capital choose our leaders?  Will you join me in this effort? Do you believe we have the power?  Dr. King told us ” Injustice Anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.  Do you believe that? If you do, contact me at skepticalbrotha@yahoo.com
