Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday that South Carolina should remove the Confederate flag from its Statehouse grounds, in part because the nation should unite under one banner while at war.

“I think about how many South Carolinians have served in our military and who are serving today under our flag and I believe that we should have one flag that we all pay honor to, as I know that most people in South Carolina do every single day,” Clinton told The Associated Press in an interview.

“I personally would like to see it removed from the Statehouse grounds,” the New York senator said during her first trip to the early voting state since announcing her White House bid.

Other Democratic hopefuls, including Sens. Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, have said the flag should come down. The banner, which once flew over the Statehouse dome and now flies nearby, is the subject of an ongoing NAACP boycott.

Clinton is one of several Democrats to draw huge crowds during campaign stops in the state, but she said during the interview that her party will have a tough time winning in GOP-heavy South Carolina

“I think it’s going to be hard for any Democrat to carry the state,” she said. “The Republican Party is very strong here.”

Earlier in the day, Clinton spoke to more than 1,500 people gathered at Allen University, a historically black college in Columbia.

The senator picked up key endorsements last week from two black state senators who helped deliver black voters to former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards in 2004.

  1. Awesome cartoon.

This Confederate flag BS is the one wedge issue the Republicans love to use to get the NASCAR crowd out to vote for them. Democrats need to point out that the flag was pretty much non-existent on state flags and statehouses before the mid 1950s and the modern era of the civil rights movement. It was a reaction to integration, and is therefore undeniably RACIST in purpose. It’s the equivalent of putting up a big banner with the N-word on it. It must be put it in its historical context that it’s RACIST and it’s showing is INDEFENSIBLE.

    The cartoon is hilarious.🙂

Gotta give The Borg Queen her props – excellent move on her part.

When you get a good point in, gotta acknowledge that – fair is fair.

There’s an article in Slate today about some woman–and advocate for reparations–who was aggressively ignored by Obama while he was speaking in SC. I’m not saying he has to be the president of black america, and I’m not saying I advocate for reparations, but he could have let the sista speak her peace or ask her question.

    Yogo,

Well, he was blindsided by an anti-war group at his first rally. So, I think they’ve taken a stand against all sorts of ‘interrupters’. He just didn’t ignore this woman, per se.

And, I wonder if she’s going to show up at a Clinton, or Edwards rally to ask the same question she was going to ask Obama. That was what crossed my mind when I read the story.

  5. I have to agree with Rikyrah on the “reparations” question. Ask all of the candidates, not just Obama. They will all give BS answers, anyway, but that’s a litmus test Obama doesn’t need to take.

I think its damn shame how the pride of the Confederate Flag is going to shit!!! The reason it is going to shit is because of our god damn government bull shitters. Such as Hilary Clinton, Obama, and our current president Bush. We need to stand up for what is right and what is right is the damn south!! Dont let anybody over talk you! people you have a voice.. the rebel flag is not a racist gesture its simply just like the American, that just so happened to come from the 1860 when slavery was a bid deal. I have only just read what clinton said,I love the stars and bars and it will be a damed shame to take it down its part of America’s history i think Clinton should shut her mouth.. The South Will Rise Again..

I agree with countryboy. Learn your damned history before you start talking. Im not racist but i’ll keep my rebel flag up regardless of what everyone thinks. Its ok for black people, to have black colleges, black television stations, and you wave african flags, why can’t we wave a southern pride flag, that has nothing to do with race. Jackasses. Hillary Clinton can kiss my ass.
