Bishop Weeks: The Devil made me do it.

Juanita bynum's husband

Hat Tip: by S.A. Reid, Atlanta Journal Constitution

Global Destiny Ministries members on Sunday circled their spiritual wagons around their pastor, Bishop Thomas Weeks III, now charged with beating his estranged wife, the nationally known evangelist Juanita Bynum.

Most congregants approached for interviews after Sunday’s 8 a.m. service declined to comment on the marital problems of Weeks, 40, and Bynum, 48.

Those who did urged caution in taking sides in the issue and passing judgment on two people they consider spiritual giants, but also human.

“There are three sides to every story,” said Clarkston’s Shannon Mayers, a frequent visitor. “Nobody has the right to judge anybody. God is in the midst of that and will work it out.”

Member Maurice Adams, 26, of Atlanta said he was disappointed to hear the news but still considers Weeks his bishop.

“We all make mistakes. He deserves another opportunity,” Adams said. “I’m hurt, but I do respect him for being man enough to show his face today.”

Weeks took the pulpit two days after his surrender to authorities in connection with the alleged attack on Bynum. His remarks included appreciation for the prayers and support that he said have come in for him and his wife and thanks to those in attendance in spite of the controversy.

Weeks sparked thunderous applause and cheers when he asked members to tell those seated next to them: “We’ve got certain things going on right now, but I refuse to stop coming to the house God built.”

Weeks, wearing a dark suit and his customary bow tie, blamed the devil for the accusation that has him facing two felony charges. He didn’t, however, offer any specifics before introducing a guest minister who preached in his stead, then exiting the room.

The bishop is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly choking, kicking and hitting Bynum on Tuesday night in a parking lot at the Renaissance Concourse Hotel and with making terroristic threats to kill her. Both are felonies.

After turning himself in, he spent six hours in the Fulton County Jail before being released on $40,000 bond Friday.

The couple reportedly met at the Renaissance to talk about reconciliation after having been separated for several months.

Bynum, known for her fiery sermons that empower women, has been in seclusion since the attack and was not present at Sunday’s 8 a.m. service.

Global Destiny is a ministry the couple co-founded and pastor. In addition to Duluth, other church locations are in Los Angeles, Washington and London.

The charges are only the latest of Weeks’ troubles.

Authorities went to his Duluth home in June to serve an eviction notice.

Six months earlier, a former employee complained to police that Weeks got physical with her in escorting her from the church property.

Weeks is due in Fulton County Superior Court on Sept. 7.

  1. You gotta be kidding me.

    THE DEVIL?

    Get.the.(*&*.out.of.here.

Look, I have no vested interest. Had never heard of this guy before he BEAT HIS WIFE.

HE BEAT HIS WIFE ON FRIDAY and had the nerve TO GET INTO THE PULPIT ON SUNDAY?

    OH HELL NO.

    Uh uh.

  2. a real chrisitan

DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR. THE DEVIL DIDNT MAKE HIM DO ANYTHING. HES SUPPOSED TO BE A CHRISTIAN, AND A BISHOP AT THAT. HES SUPPOSED TO HAVE A DIVINE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND WHAT HE DID WAS JUST EVIL. HOW COULD HE EVEN GET BACK ON THE PULPIT EVEN TO KEEP HIS TITLE AS BISHOP. HE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF. MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON HIS SOUL…..

  3. See, this is why we have pimp-daddy preachers who beat their women in the pulpits; they have ENABLING CONGREGATIONS all too willing to “turh the other cheek” cause that’s what Jesus would have done.

To which I reply, “BS, cause Jesus wouldn’t have hit a woman, period.”

I don’t care what went down between Bishop Weeks and Rev. Bynum. He put his hands on her, and it wasn’t in ministerial fashion, either. ‘Nuff Said.

And he got physical with another female member of the church:

“Six months earlier, a former employee complained to police that Weeks got physical with her in escorting her from the church property.”

This probably isn’t the first time he hit Rev. Bynum; it’s just the first time his ass got caught in public.

I thought it was just the Free Will Baptist men trying to beat women behind the scenes I got one them. Is Biship Weeks not sure that the Devil just does’nt live in him. I am looking for the series on how the perform exerocism on him and cast that Demon out. He better be glad i’m not his church member, I hit back. If Jaunita needs help she can call me and the girls, Holler…..

I am a senior pastor and my heart goes out to both Prophetess Bynum and her husband Bishop Weeks. Especially to him. The world has considered this man as an animal, but he is human. I don’t think he should have hit or physically assaulted his wife in any way, but he is human. What we need to do is pray for the man and the woman of God. Bishop Weeks you are a great man of God. Hold your hed up high, and this to shall pass…!!!

The bible clearly states to love your wife as Jesus loves the church. To lay down your life for your wife , not lay down her life. The bible also states in Psalm 105 Touch not my annointed and do my prophets no harm. What punishment man has for him is in no comparison of what he has to face with God the Judge. I hope that he confessed and did not use that lame excuse as Adam and Eve did.I believe that God looks at the heart and the attitudes of individuals. If he was sorry, then say so/ Seek counseling. Separation may be a good thing right now.

when i first heard of this i cried. i cried because dr. juanita bynum is someone i really love and look up to and thank god i was no where around because i physically would have court a charge myself because i would have put my hands on him. i do want to be careful how i label the man of god because he is someone god appointed and he will have to ask to god. but right now my concern is not about him, its about the phyical and emotional well being of dr. juanita bynum. dr. juanita if you are listening i love you and keep your head up and you are right this too will pass. i know you are in touch with heaven and you will make the right decision. love your myspace friend grace baby.

grace and peace to all, i am a minister of the word od God and also a truth speaker, there are two ministries, intercession and accusation, none of us know exactly what happenned that night, and it is not good to pick sides unless you are picking jesus side and leaving the devil, choose a ministry you either join the devil and begin to accuse either party, for the devil is the accuser of the bretheren or choose intercession, where you pray for both parties and allow God to uncover the carpet, sweep the stuff out and heal what need to be healed and deliver what needs to be delivered, Bless you all

  10. I am tired of people making excuses for this man. I understand all Christians need to grow, but I think he should have been “Christian man enough” to walk away even if she hit him first. Also we don’t know if he was really called by the Lord, he may have called himself. There’s a lot of that going around and before it’s over God is going to expose all of them. Look at Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggert, that man in Colorado etc.

  11. The Ravage Beast

I don’t know what happened – I wasn’t there. I’ll wait for the Bishop to make a statement and see if he pleads guilty or goes through a trial.

But…at some point we have to stop placing religious leaders on pedestals. They are human first, preachers second.

  12. The Ravage Beast

…One more thing. Why is it that when people get in trouble or face accusations they blame the devil, or somehow “find Jesus”? Is morality and decency owned by religion?

  13. sagereader

He should step down immediately. Period.

The two of them should DIVORCE, not separate, immediately. Period.

We should have zero tolerance for domestic abuse. I don’t care who you are. For him to ever reconciliate with her and reclaim his bishopry or whatever you call it would send a tragic message to the women in America who are in abusive relationships and to the children there to witness it. It would also send a tragic message to his congregation about the gravity of domestic abuse and the accountability a spiritual leader should have to their followers.

For people who are saying, there are two sides and we don’t know the whole story–you just need to look at the bruises in the photos on the woman. That’s all the story you need to know.

  14. Why is it that in the African American community, when we do something stupid and wrong we “don’t want to judge” ourselves and wait until the full story comes out; however, when a white person does something, we have a “fry the Cracker” mentality?

When will we learn that our lack of consistency or balance is what weakens our credibility in public matters?

  15. For once, I find myself agreeing with YBM on this issue. We often are “tuning the other cheek” instead of demanding accountability from those who purport to be leaders of anything.

And, as Sagereader said – screw the both sides to every story – there is NEVER a reason for a woman to be hit. Period.

  16. Why is it that in the African American community, when we do something stupid and wrong we “don’t want to judge” ourselves and wait until the full story comes out; however, when a white person does something, we have a “fry the Cracker” mentality?

I said it in the original Bynum post…I don’t think Black folk take Domestic Abuse SERIOUSLY. Look at all the folk that want to ‘ hear his side of the story’.

    HE BEAT HIS WIFE.

Unless she was coming at him with a cleaver or a gun…

    WHAT SIDE IS THERE?

    N-O-N-E

We, as a community, DO NOT take it seriously. But, if she had been KILLED, then we would have been all over THE PO-LICE, chastising them for ‘what they didn’t do’, and they didn’t do it because she was a Black woman, and if this had been a White woman..yadda yadda yadda.

This woman got her ASS BEAT.

    He SHOULD have been arrested.

He SHOULD have been BOOED AND YELLED AT THE MOMENT HE TRIED TO STEP INTO THE PULPIT.

NO MAN has the right to PUT HIS HANDS ON A WOMAN IN VIOLENCE.

    NO MAN.

    Period.

And, until we take this seriously, too many of our Sisters are going to wind up in the hospital and morgue.

  17. Renee

If she does not follow through on the charges, I will lose all respect for her. She has a congregation full of women that need to know that his behavior was criminal and she needs to show up in court to follow through and send a message. Domestic Violence is never acceptable.

  18. keep it real

    DENIAL! DENIAL! DENIAL!

Sagereader and YBM you two are right on target. The people that support Weeks are in DENIAL it’s a shame that people are willing to look the other way instead of holding him accountable for what he has done. A lot of people say don’t judge, but God says that you shall know them by the fruit that they bear. I once volunteered at a domestic violence shelter and their was a woman that was a pastor’s wife who told us that she had gone to the church members for help because her husband was beating her; GUESS WHAT! the members told her that the problem between her and her husband was a private matter. NO BODY WOULD HELP HER. She stayed for a long time until she got tired of the but whippins. Finally when she did leave the church people were mad at her. People are selective about how they view wrong when they are fond of that person. SHAME ON SUPPORTERS OF WEEKS

  19. Bishop Weeks you are truly an embarrasment to bishops everywhere. How DARE you lay a hand on her. I hope you heart is right before God on judgement day, or else you goin to that that place called hell.

  20. Angie

Bynum will bounce back for two reasons.
    A. God has her back like that. He is faithful even we are faithless.
    B. Bynum will be an even more rich woman because of this. She will sell books and sell out conferences. And yes, I know money doesn’t solve our problems. But it sho’ does help you cope a lot better.

  21. I AM SAD TO THE BONE

I JUST WANT TO ASK BISHOP WEEK DID YOU SAY YOU WAS SORRY OR YOU DID;NT WANT TO HURT YOUR WIFE AND WHY DID YOU GO AN HIRE THOSE HIGH PRICE LAWERS WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON DOING . THE BOTTEM LINE YOU ARE WRONG MAN OF GOD WRONG HOW CAN YOU STAND IN THE PULPIT AND ACT LIKE YOU ARE RIGHT YOU ARE NOT.. LET ME BE THE FIRST TO TELL YOU YOU ALL HAVE HURT MINISTRY AND GOD WILL DEAL WITH ALL THAT DON;T BELIVE HIS WORD. I AM SAD ABOUT THE HOLD THING THIS IS WHY PEOPLE DON;T BELIVE IN CHURCH AND PASTORS BECAUSE SOME WHERE IT TO FAKE AND ABOUT MONEY AND WHOS WHO .

  22. The chin checker

This is one time when I would like to see the Christian brothers’ act like Muslim men… beat that boy’s ass! Then throw him out of that ministry he started. Don’t try to cover it up, or soft shoe the whole thing. His members should be the first ones on his ass, by not coming to service! Get him out of the ministry! Or are you just too comfortable? Accept the truth for what it is, and get him out of there! Don’t sit there and act like nothing happened, and don’t let him think that he’s O.K! He’s a PUNK who use to get his lunch money taken, and then cry to his momma! What if Juanita was your mom, sister, or daughter? Then how would you feel? You wouldn’t be talking about prayer then, would you? No! You would be too busy trying to catch the first plan over there to get your hands around his throat, and stomp his ass out. Can’t stand clowns like him always doing something and then trying to hide behind religion/ the gospel! He’s lucky he wasn’t in Jamaica, cause the women there stick together and ain’t scared to deal with clowns like this guy. They’ll cutcha.

  23. The chin checker

I think thee needs to be a hunt for his monkey ass! Pull that clown out into the street, and comence to beatin-that-ass! Take pictures, sell tickets, the whole nine yards. And when its all over with, put him back in the pulpit and let him preach on!

  24. Laine

God is calling for repentance not excuses. For Judgment has already been set…

    Malachi 2:8

v.1 AND NOW , Oh you priests, this commandment is for you.

v.2 If you will not hear, and if you will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, says the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yes, I have cursed them already, because you do not lay it to heart.

v.3 Behold, I will corrupt your seed and spread dung upon your faces, even the dung of your solemn feasts; and it shall take you away with it.

v.4 And you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, that my covenant might be with Levi, says the Lord of hosts.

v.5 My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him for the fear wherewith he feared Me, and was afraid before My name.

v.6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with Me in peace and equity , and did turn many away from iniquity.

v.7 For the priest’s lips should keep knowledge, and they should see the law at his mouth: for he is the messenger of the Lord of hosts.

v.8 But you are departed out of the way; you have caused many to stumble at the law; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts.

v.9 Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as you have not kept My ways, but have been partial in the law.

v.13 And this have you done again, covering the alter of the Lord with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that He regards not the offering any more, or receives it with good will at your hand.

v.14 Yet, you say, Why does He reject it? Because the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt treacherously: yet she is your companion, and the wife of your covenant.

v.15 And did not He make one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

v.16 For the Lord, the God of Israel says: I hate divorce and separation and him who covers his wife with violence, says the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that you deal not treacherously.

  25. connie

Weeks had the nerve to say; “It’s the devil”. People stop blaming the devil for your own choice. How can anyone be healed from corruption if we keep blaming the devil like Eve blaming the serpent. Eve did suffer the consequence for her own choice, And, I am sure that each man shall suffer for his own choice. Jesus did not have to die to redeem man. If it was only the devil fault.

As for juanita, she needs to sit somewhere and wait for the retribution of the LORD. Juanita has proclaimed contrarary from the word. She is greedy for money, and fame. In the beginning of her ministry, I used to listen to her but the moment she transformed the Holy Spirit warned me about her being false. There is no gravity in her speech.
She is completetly in the flesh and she is no longer carry the anointing of the LORD.
The Lord shall continue to expose the false prophets who bring delusion in the mind of others. I tell you the truth, Juanita, today, I rise up with the word of the Lord upon you. If you do not sit your shame before the world will be greater. For the Lord God of Abraham will not rest because the message is “Jesus Crucified”. It’s not prosperity. The word is pure in simple. REMEMBER THAT!

  26. barbara

I was shock when i heard about this, but as every christian should know that the ministery of God is being attact and we should pray like we never prayed before. The devil knows that his time is almost up, so he is romaning to an foe seeking whom he can devole, not only ministers, but anyone who belive in God the Father God the Son Jesus Christ and God the Holy Ghost, who is willing to stand up and be counted for the Love of christ. Let us all remember that we are counted as sheep amoung wolves. We all shell come short of the glory, David was the apple of God eye and he fell short; even the disciple forsuck Jesus Christ one even betraid him.Let us all pray for one another and seek God’s face,to indure untill the end. To Junita Bynum I say be stronge you are not along Jesus said that he will never forsake you nor leave you along, Jesus is faithful even when we are not faithful. Jesus keeps his promises and his word will not come back vode,Jesus Loves us all. He suffer for us all he gave up his life for us; there is nothing imposable for him to do,He will heal your body and mend your broken heart for he is our Jehovah-Jireh,Jehovah-Rapha,JehovahNissi,JehovaShalom,Jehovah-Rohi,Jehovah-Shammab and El-Elyon.By BB

I believe that the Devil did make him do it because he is out of Fellowship with God.He doesn’t have a close enough relationship with God the Devil WAS able to posess him.
The Bible states there are 2 seeds one is the seed of God and the other is the seed of the Devil, this man has the seed of the Devil and should be tossed out of the church. Genesis 3:15:
And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed ….
Genesis 3:15 indicates two seeds — the seed of the serpent (Devil)and the seed of the woman (Jesus)
To see the result of these two seeds planted in man, let us take a hypothetical John Doe. He is born of body and soul, a natural man. He has no spiritual seed in him. When this man of body and soul confesses with his mouth the Lord Jesus and believes that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9,10), he is born again with God’s seed (Christ) in him. Having this seed in him, John Doe is body, soul and spirit with the love of God and eternal life.
The Word of God clearly defines the two spirit worlds. We who believe God need not err and wander about in darkness; we need to study God’s Word to see its precise accuracy.

Things that are bad are from the Devil, things that are good are from God.Hitting your wife is bad-it’s got nothing to do with being human.I’ve been a human my whole life and have never struck another human.Saying this man is only human just gives him another excuse. He will do it again and one day maybe he’ll kill and when and if he does kill or seriously injure someone, better damn well believe, yep the Devil DID make him.Murder, lying, suffering ,love of money and power thats all the Devils play ground.
Once we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, we have the mind of Christ (or we should if we bother to read the Bible ourselves), we are to be like Christ- I haven’t read anywhere that Jesus was smaking the ladies around.
Get this guy out of your church people and his supporters too, birds of a feather flock together.
May God wake up his congregation.

  28. Delores

There is no excuse for the man they call Bishop Weeks.

As far as the unreasonable comment of I guess a Lady, called Connie on Sept. 2nd. I dare you speak of Prophetess Bynum like that. You sound like the other woman or possibly one that wishes you had every thing Prophetess Bynum has. You sound like you have a lot of envy and jealous in your heart. Your comments remind me of two Jr. High girls mad about a boy because he dumps you for the other girl. You have turned your anger towards the wrong person. Girl, you need to get in front of a mirror and take a good look at your self and ask God to help you deal with all that junk on the inside of you. Sister, you need help and only God can clean up that nasty heart you have. I know what I’m talking about, because I use to have a harden heart. Check your self!

  29. bishop week is still human and we are all working to be like christ
if at all he flawed now it’s a lesson he must learn not to do so again but at times some experiences could be very expensive

  30. Jude

We are praying and God is answering, we just don’t like his answer. Keep saying don’t judge, are you kiddin me? A fact is a fact, not judgement. First weeks said the devil made him do, then he denies the abuse ever happened, which is it huh?. The brother has lost his everlasting mind, and God is answering our prayers. Get ready! Like it or not!!

  31. justin

I live in the U.K and I only just found this out. I am saddened to hear this but we must not judge. Let us have Prophettess Bynum and Bishop Weeks in our prayers.

  33. He who is without sin cast the first stone. That is why I am so glad that God is the judge of Man and not man. First of all, all those with negative opinions need to look at their ownselves. the only differnce between Weeks and you is He is in the pubic eye and you aren’t. and if you were how would you handle the situation? That is the question.
