In court records unsealed Monday in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn., federal agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun store and target a predominantly African-American high school in a murder spree that was to begin in Tennessee. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the school by name.
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of ATF’s Nashville field office, said the two men planned to kill 88 African Americans, including 14 by beheading. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.
The men also sought to go on a national killing spree after the Tennessee murders, with Obama as its final target, Cavanaugh told The Associated Press.
“They said that would be their last, final act — that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama,” Cavanaugh said. “They didn’t believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.”
No immediate comment
An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.
The men, Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark., are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.
The two men were arrested Oct. 22 by the Crockett County, Tenn., Sheriff’s Office. “Once we arrested the defendants and suspected they had violated federal law, we immediately contacted federal authorities,” said Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce.
Cowart and Schlesselman are charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.
The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said.
The court records say Cowart and Schlesselman also bought nylon rope and ski masks to use in a robbery or home invasion to fund their spree, during which they allegedly planned to go from state to state and kill people.
Ram vehicle into Obama?
For the Obama plot, the legal documents show, Cowart and Schlesselman “planned to drive their vehicle as fast as they could toward Obama shooting at him from the windows.”
“Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt,” the court complaint states. “Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt.”
Cavanaugh said there’s no evidence — so far — that others were willing to assist Cowart and Schlesselman with the plot.
He said authorities took the threats very seriously.
“They seemed determined to do it,” Cavanaugh said. “Even if they were just to try it, it would be a trail of tears around the South.”
The court documents say the two men met about a month ago on the Internet and found common ground in their shared “white power” and “skinhead” philosophy.
14, 88 are skinhead symbols
The numbers 14 and 88 are symbols in skinhead culture, referring to a 14-word phrase attributed to an imprisoned white supremacist: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children” and to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H. Two “8”s or “H”s stand for “Heil Hitler.”
Helena-West Helena, on the Mississippi River in east Arkansas’ Delta, is in one of the nation’s poorest regions, trailing even parts of Appalachia in its standard of living. Police Chief Fred Fielder said he had never heard of Schlesselman.
However, the reported threat of attacking a school filled with black students worried Fielder. Helena-West Helena, with a population of 12,200, is 66 percent black. “Predominantly black school, take your pick,” he said.

I used to own a cat. I raised her from a very small kitten in my house, never letting her go outside until one day, I decided to take her to the park. She had never seen a bird in her life, having matured to the age of 1 year. Relaxing in the sun on a soothing summer day, she all of sudden she sees a school of ducks walking alongside the lake. She pounced to her feet, started shaking, showing fangs, and crouched to an attack position. I had to grab her before she would bolt toward the ducks. I had to constantly pet her to calm her down while she was still vibrating in my arms. The ducks were not threatening my cat, so then what motivated her to turn in a vampire when she saw them?
It seems to me that this certain group of “god fearing patriotic Americans,” are maybe not racially motivated to kill us, but maybe they are animalistically motivated to kill black people.

I think it’s interesting how easily some of our white brothers and sisters homogenize the entire African American community. If Lois Farrakhan, for example, utters something offensive, of course all of us Negroes must agree with him and share the blame. As fate would have it, white people are more heterogenous and complicated. They don’t need to be ashamed of or accountable for the actions of say, George W. Bush or Jeffrey Dahmer. But we’re all guilty if some of the 40 million African Americans who inhabit this country say or do something that offends Jane Doe.
Really, the last eight years and this presidential campaign have been an advertisement for the decline and fall of white Americans. Almost 60% of white Americans voted for GW Bush. According to polls, a majority of white Americans supports McCain-Palin. Does anyone remember those bumper stickers that began popping up during Watergate that stated “Don’t blame me, I’m from Massachusetts? (Massachusetts was the only state that didn’t vote for Nixon in the 1972 election.) Starting in 2004 we should have printed bumper stickers that read, “Don’t blame me, I’m African American.” Jane Doe can spout all of the hatred she wants to, but 94% of us were smart enough to vote against the maniac we have in the White House. Now that’s plenty of reason to be proud to be black.

Did anyone catch Rachel Maddow’s excellent segment on her Sunday night special show (MSNBC–The Rachel Maddow Show) saying these long lines/long hours folks are dealing with at the polls for early voting, being a “poll tax”, just not the type one normally thinks of when thinking of old-school poll taxes? Definite food for thought, and darn if she isn’t right. Love that Rachel! And why is this happening in 2008, in the country that supposedly holds her democracy above all else? I’m having total flashbacks to South Africa’s first election in which blacks were FINALLY given the right to vote after apartheid, with people walking for miles and standing in long lines in horrific heat in order to cast their vote. A bit too similar, and more than a bit shameful for our country.

As far as Cliff’s comment is concerned, it’s just the typical cop-out of responsiblity. Crown Heights was a lynching. There has also been hate crimes and speech directed at Asians by AfriKKKan Amercan faux-civil rights activists. Whatever your people have been through does not mean you get a free pass at lynching others. These people had NOTHING to do with what Africans have been though. Rikyrah: Tonight, as I was watching Senator Obama’s final speech in Virginia, tears formed in my eyes. I cried. And that’s major. I’m not a cryer.
But I cried because I’m happy, tired, drained, overwhelmed with pride, excited, nervous, and delighted. All of those emotions just overtook me, and tears rolled from my eyes.
I pray with my heart that Wednesday morning we all can have a smile on our face.

I guess I will always see America for what it is and has been. Obama win for me does not lessen or absolve America of its racist past or present. White America has the unbelievable ability to compartmentalize successful black folks from the rest of us. I saw it the race and whites said it out loud. America changes when ALL of its citizens are treated equally, not one who is promoted the highest office in the land. I am a student of history and I read about the unbelievable numbers of black officials elected in office during reconstruction and people claimed times were changing, but only to be followed by Jim Crow. In SAME 2 years of this campaign…Sean Bell murdered and Megan Williams was tortured.
A month ago a 75 pound bear cub was killed and Obama signs were stapled to his body was left on a college campus. Obama was hung in effigy in different places in the US, not to mention the plots to kill him and black school children. I just hope we are STILL taking these threats serious and have not gone to “everything is fine now” because many felt that way after the voting rights act….
I just hope black people in our euphoria don’t forget history and it only takes on nut job to change it.
