Stephanie Tubbs Jones stricken by aneurysm; Dies

Standard

Hat Tip: Cleveland Plain Dealer

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in Congress, is in critical condition after suffering a burst aneurysm last night, officials said this afternoon.

Officials updated her condition this afternoon after conflicting reports that the congresswoman was dead. Numerous media outlets – including The Plain Dealer on its Web site cleveland.com, CNN and the Associated Press – reported that Tubbs Jones had died.

Tubbs Jones, 58, served as a Cuyahoga County judge and prosecutor before succeeding U.S. Rep. Louis Stokes. She has served five terms in Congress and is expected to easily win her sixth in November.

She was driving in Cleveland Heights Tuesday about 9 p.m. when a police officer pulled her over for driving erratically. The officer found Tubbs Jones unconscious but breathing. She was rushed to Huron Hospital.

The mood of supporters around noon was somber. Cleveland Councilman Roosevelt Coats was seen sobbing outside the hospital. He said Tubbs Jones was unconscious and her friends and relatives were preparing for the worst.

Tubbs Jones has long been one of the region’s most recognizable politicians. Often clad in red — the color of her sorority Delta Sigma Theta — she is a regular at parades, senior centers and schools. Her annual Labor Day picnic at Luke Easter Park is a must-stop for any serious Democratic candidate running in the city, county or state.

She has been outspoken in her support of black candidates. She backed Raymond Pierce in his unsuccessful bid for mayor in 2001. Four years later, Tubbs Jones played a key role in helping Frank Jackson defeat Jane Campbell. She also stumped for countless black judicial candidates.

Tubbs Jones drew attention this year for her staunch support of U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton’s bid for the Democratic nomination for president. Tubbs Jones drew some criticism for her support of Clinton and not U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

Her husband, Mervyn Sr., died unexpectedly in 2003.

UPDATE:  Stephanie Tubbs Jones has passed.

U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones’ family and officials at Huron Hospital have announced that the five-term congresswoman has died.

She was 58.

This is the statement:

Tubbs Jones Family, Huron Hospital and Cleveland ClinicAugust 20, 2008 – 6:40 p.m.

“Throughout the course of the day and into this evening, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones’ medical condition declined. Medical doctors and neurosurgeons from Huron Hospital and Cleveland Clinic sadly report that at 6:12 p.m. Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones died.

She dedicated her life in public service to helping others and will continue to do so through organ donations.

Please keep her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.”

What an exceptional woman who rose through the ranks in the Ohio political establishment.

I wish I had one-tenth of her effervescence.

    May she rest in peace.

Reading this story only confirms that God truly had a reason to keep my mother here. God was definitely not through using her in our lives. This is why I, even in weariness, thank God for every single day that he has so graciously given me with my mother. Even in her fractured, disabled state, God allowed her to live to pass something else to us.

Although Tubbs-Jones disturbed me with her endless support of Senator Clinton, I still respect and honor her contributions to the American legacy, Black Folks, DST, and all those she came in contact with. I’m sure there are some who will truly miss her presence in their lives.

May God keep us all in the palm of His hand.

She can make pancakes for St. Peter now until Miss Hillary and Bill join her at the pearly gates.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  4. Hello there!

She was a phenomenal black woman, indeed!

May her loving soul rest in peace with the Lord.

I hope that everyone who reads about this very sad news story realizes that aneurysms CAN BE detected by many medical tests BEFORE they rupture. I hope that perhaps one black woman’s life will be spared because she read about this tragedy and made sure that she went online to research all of the risk factors of aneurysms.

    Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

  5. Off topic, yet somewhat related: Gene Upshaw, former Oakland Raider and head of the NFL players union died of pancreatic cancer today. The unbelievable part is that he wasn’t disgnosed with it until LAST SUNDAY.

Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Stephanie Tubbs and Gene Upshaw. Is it me, but in the course of a week we are having African American leaders in their field die abrubtly. I am just asking the question to garner interest. Please do not get offended……

Speaking of mother’s, Angie’s (may yours rest in peace), I was talking to my mom about Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac and she mentioned how prominent deaths in the community come in 3’s and 5’s.

So following up on UbUntU, I wonder who might be next?

  8. Ernesto,

I just came to post that. I was like, they have to be kidding about Upshaw. Stunning.

As for Tubbs-Jones, I disagreed with her, but her accomplishments cannot be disputed. And, my thoughts are with her family. She was quite proud of her family – heard her speak of them with such love and devotion on C-Span with Brian Lamb.

    zeit,

I’m hoping it will stop at 4.

  9. Angie

Z, thanks for the kind wishes, but my mother is still with me. May she rest in peace when that day comes. But as right now, I’m perfectly okay with her still being here as long as God will allow.
    Peace y’all. I’m gone again.

Rest in Peace to Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes and Representative Tubbs. I don’t like us dying, which is why we can not disrespect any minute that we have in this world. The best way to go out, is to go out with a bang. Let’s say that you are on a mission. Let’s also say that this mission is from God. When we say , “Lord give me the strength to help me change the things that I can change, but accept the things that I can’t change.” Some of us die without knowing our purpose in life. I have to bang my purpose, my purpose in life.

Thank God for these prime examples of people before they went out, and lived their purpose. They did not just go out, but they went out with a bang. 🙂

Doesn’t anybody think there’s something really fishy is going on?

Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Tubbs-Jones die and Morgan Freeman gets in an accident. This all happens in the year that Obama stands a good, if ever worsening chance that he will become the next president.

Yes, I’m thinking conspiracy theory. You bet. Is this a normal statistical occurrence? It might be but I wouldn’t bet on it.

  12. TheBlackViewFromAmsterdam

    That should be:
Gene Upshaw, LeRoi Moore, Bo Diddley, Hiram Bullock, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Tubbs-Jones die. And Morgan Freeman gets in an accident.
That is SEVEN deaths and one “accident”. This year.

  13. TheBlackViewFromAmsterdam

Maybe, just maybe, you’re not skeptical enough?

I also don’t the political gain here, but maybe it’s not intended as political gain, but as someone acting out, going wild on famous Afro-Americans out there.
If there’s even one more black major of a town larger than a 100,000 citizens dropping dead, on completely natural causes, we
re looking at a full blown conspiracy here.
And come on, it’s not the movies where the murderers make obvious mistake so the hero can catch them after 90 mins.

Bear with me, for a moment: wouldn’t a successful killer make it look like something else, preferably something tied to their medical history?
The Blackwater mercenary corporations gets a staggering ONE BILLION DOLLAR PER YEAR from Bushiebushie, and McSame is going on with that. Plus, they have ties to the intelligence community. That means they:
    A. could have gained access to celeb medical records.
    B. have the skills to do this.

Why? Obviously, money. How? You got me, I don’t know how they should gain from killing the seven above. But that is the whole trick of the game …

Yes, it sounds nutty. So did Pearl Harbor and 9/11. Prior to the events.

  14. There is no correlation between the deaths of seven celebrities and politicians with a conspiracy to murder blackfolks. Come on, now. Be serious. What does exist is a broken health care system that provides uneven care, which has a racially disparate effect on people of color.

  15. sure

Conspiracy… That’s wacky -It’s not like Ohio is going to play any important part in the upcoming election… or like Tubbs had anything to do with electoral oversight… or like she was the type of woman who would whistleblow if something was going on… Ridiculous theory!
