OBAMA GOT GAME: Junior Senator crushes Hillary and Edwards in historic win

Standard

I’m sorry I took too long, but as Gene Robinson of the Washington Post has said, this is a “Goosebumps moment.” As I write and listen once more to the victory speech, the tears are coming and I feel as emotional as a pregnant woman does. I will be in church on Sunday morning and nobody will be able to hold me down because I will be a shouting fool.

I needed this as my grandparents needed Martin and Malcolm. I needed this because I need to believe in something again. I needed this because my spirit has been shattered, my joy has been stolen, and my hope in my country destroyed. God has moved and his hand is clearly on Barack Obama. Iowa, 95% white, has sent the nation and the world a message that in the words of one of Sam Cooke’s signature tunes,”A Change gon’ Come.” And come it has.

Last night, Barack Obama, finally gave us, his people, “a word from the Lord.”

“They said this day would never come. They said our sights were set too high. They said this country was too divided, too disillusioned to ever come together around a common purpose. But on this January night, at this defining moment in history, you have done what the cynics said we couldn’t do.”

“You have done what the state of New Hampshire can do in five days. You have done what America can do in this New Year 2008. In lines that stretched around schools and churches, in small towns and big cities, you came together as Democrats, Republicans and Independents to stand up and say that we are one nation, one people, and our time for a change has come.”

I still have Goosebumps. I could shout right here in this internet cafe. I don’t know about you, but after the almost divine intervention of Oprah, I could feel this tectonic shift in American politics coming.

Basking in the glow of this historical moment, one I’ve dreamed of for 25 years, I’ve overcome my bitter and sarcastic cynicism, and I have decided to endorse Barack Obama for President of the United States.

I am not taking back the substance of my criticisms because they represent my unvarnished feelings. Today, however, I feel like Patti Labelle and have “a new attitude.” Looking back over last year, I skillfully erected a wall of opposition to Barack Obama as strong as anything in the biblical Jericho because of his various missteps and obvious pandering to the corporate power structure. It got to the point where I could not even hear the brotha speak without picking out how he was telegraphing his mainstream intentions to the establishment and I just tuned him out. He didn’t move me until last night but Michelle and Oprah did, I must admit.

Michelle Obama cracked the walls of my ideological Jericho with her forthright manner in general and her South Carolina speech in particular. I cannot say enough about how attractive, articulate and persuasive a spokesperson she is on behalf of her husband. In February, after hearing him in person for the first time, I made it clear how necessary it was for Barack to give blackfolks, “A Word From The Lord.” He did and I guarantee that Black America will respond by abandoning Hillary Clinton en masse.

For me, however, Michelle Obama had already beat him to the punch with her address to a Orangeburg, South Carolina gathering. Sistah girl nailed it.

Michelle is able to communicate from the heart in a way that is both uplifting and empowering to me. Her spiel serves the dual purpose of communicating to whitefolks her safe middle class bonifides and her commitment to black empowerment. The frank recounting of the reservations she expressed about a presidential bid tells us that the sistah is grounded by the love of her upbringing, and will use those values as a guidepost for the road ahead. For Michelle, the personal is political which is demonstrated by her faith in a loving God and her wholesome commitment to strengthening families, especially the black family. I can think of no other woman I’d rather see become First Lady.

Michelle’s statuesque beauty, effortless style, bottomless grace, quiet intellect and amazing humility are exactly the qualities that America’s trailblazing black First Lady must exhibit and that her husband ought to have at his side.

Oprah, on the other hand, is another matter entirely. Being in South Carolina with that massive crowd was almost a religious experience. The walls of my ideological Jericho came down with a mighty shout. I’ve been wrestling with how to tell y’all because I knew when I left the stadium that I would support Obama.

I traveled to South Carolina alone and adopted the lady in line next to me as my play mom for the day. I asked Ms. Johnson how many of her girlfriends supported Hillary. Ms. Johnson told me, “I don’t know nobody supporting Hillary.” I shoulda known then that Obama had ended Hillary’s chances of the nomination. Taking nothing away from the formidable imperial guard surrounding Hillary, I am quite comfortable predicting that Hillary will lose New Hampshire and the nomination to Obama.

Trailblazers like Oprah were way ahead of people like me. Never a true skeptic although she remained aloof from politics, Oprah, a billionaire as a result of her finger on the pulse of this country, knew a winner when she saw one.

Pondering the import of Oprah Winfrey’s whirlwind tour on behalf of Barack Obama has left me seeing the world in a new way and has me viewing Obama’s groundbreaking candidacy through the prism of Oprah Winfrey’s experience. Oprah’s humble yet passionate articulation of Obama’s cause brought the right touch of star power and street cred. Skeptical pundits have been forever silenced by Oprah’s power to help Obama draw weekend crowds of 66,000 in three states.

Both Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, as Maya Angelou would agree, are phenomenal women, phenomenally. Just like Michelle Obama, I’ve had trouble reconciling Barack Obama the man and Barack Obama the phenomenon. Together, Michelle and Oprah helped put it into the proper perspective for me. Let me break it down, it’s all about the O, and I don’t mean Overstock.com.

Examining the arc of her remarkable life from Mississippi, Tennessee and Illinois, I am struck by how similar it tracks the same path as another daughter of Mississippi: Ida B. Wells-Barnett. I’ve always believed that although a prominent heroine of black history, Mrs. Wells-Barnett never fully received her due as a result of the bitter Victorian sexism of her time. Mrs. Wells-Barnett more than earned her place in the pantheon of black historical legends like Frederick Douglass and W.E.B. DuBois.

Born into slavery in 1862, orphaned at 14 by a yellow fever epidemic and left to raise five younger siblings, Ida B. Wells rose from the grinding poverty of Holly Springs, Mississippi to the highest echelon of black society. A teacher, journalist, anti-lynching activist, feminist, suffragist and Republican politician (we were republicans then), her significant contributions to our struggle against white supremacy and Jim Crow segregation cannot be exaggerated.

Crusader in Defense of the Black Body

Well educated for a child of slaves, she was educated at Mississippi’s Rust College and Tennessee’s Fisk University, both HBCU’s. By twenty, she moved with her siblings to Tennessee and settled in Memphis. By twenty-two, Wells-Barnett was leading campaigns against segregation in public accommodations. By twenty-four, she was writing editorials and investigative pieces to fight against lynching and white supremacy. She became a crusader in defense of the Black Body and a defender of our lives against the relentlessly racist oppression imposed by Jim Crow.

Crusader in Defense of the Black Spirit

Kosciusko, Mississippi born Oprah Winfrey, a trailblazing journalist, businesswoman, media personality, philanthropist, and child advocate, picked up Ida’s torch and has become a crusader in defense of the black spirit. Nashville’s first Black news anchor, she has used her life to fight a crusade against child sexual abuse, racism, poverty, and neglect. Single-handedly, the victim of rape and sexual molestation at the hands of cousin, uncle and her mother’s boyfriend, she is responsible for federal legislation that she authored to create a national registry of sex offenders to track predators against our children.

A philanthropist of legendary scale, she has given millions to black colleges and universities, is spending more money on rebuilding housing for hurricane Katrina victims than the damn federal government-over $17,000,000 million, despite billions appropriated and not spent by Washington, and is channeling millions of dollars for educational programs and HIV/AIDS programs in this country and worldwide.

An actress of legendary prowess, she came to national attention in her portrayal of Sophia in Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple.” The character Sophia is asked by the wife of the town’s Mayor if she would like to be her maid. Sophia’s reply, “Hell No” is so robust, vehement, and unexpected that it ends up causing a dust-up in which she has to defend herself from a racist physical assault for “sassing” Miss Millie and her white male defenders. Sophia ends up rotting in Jail for years before being re-united with her family and the “kind-hearted” bitch for which she initially refused to work-as her maid.

Domestic servitude in the kitchens of white women is part and parcel of the history of black women in this country and touches upon a raw nerve that exists for black women of multiple generations-even now. Black women’s unjustified allegiance to Hillary Clinton tap dances on that nerve. My maternal grandmother, now in her 8th decade, is a woman of remarkable intestinal fortitude, humor, wisdom, and unassailable dignity. She is the rock upon which our family has relied for nearly 60 years. As a young mother of three and wife of an abusive husband, she found herself having to abandon the marriage and flee to the safety of family a good distance away. Work as a domestic in the homes of white women was what was available to her and she took it and used it to put herself through nursing school.

Mama told me how she was asked by the south Florida matron she worked for if she knew what “elbow grease” was. The woman wanted Mama to get down on her hands and knees and scrub the floor with a toothbrush like a house slave on the plantation. That vignette has always stayed with me and is like a festering boil that never heals. My grandmama’s story reveals the texture, depth, and authenticity of black women’s struggle in this country. It is something that Hillary Clinton, blinded by her sense of royal entitlement, will never understand and something that the grandson of a British colonial servant does.

Reminding us of the “Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” on the tour with the Obama’s, Oprah echoed Jane Pittman when she famously asked each of the children, “Are you the one, Are you the one that will save us.” He won’t single-handedly save us, but I sincerely believe that he is the one for this moment.

His election as president, should it occur, will not overnight result in a diminution of the world’s oppressive racial order, but it will be a step in the right direction for change. I could never get the image out of my head that Michelle conjured up of her husband taking the oath of office. I don’t think he can single-handedly end white supremacy and the grip of capitalist patriarchy, but I think that he may serve as an inspiration to the child or children who can.

Obama truly got game. He can unite this racially divided country in the spirit of brotherhood as nobody can, and for this reason, he will have my unswerving support.

    SB,

    Excellent post!!

Beside every great man, strides a great woman. In Senator Obama’s case, there are two that are visible.

On behalf of those of us on the back of the truck, welcome to the Turnip Posse!

    SB,
Being an avid reader of your blog, I very rarely post. However, the moment has touched my heart in a way that I needed to say a couple of things. First, last night was something I envisioned by the emotions released have been uncontrollable. I’m 47 years old and have had an Obama sticker on my car for quite some time. When white folks got behind him early on, I decided to give him a chance and can honestly say was with him from the beginning. Like you said, you need him, Michelle, and Oprah like we needed Martin and Malcolm in the ’60s. However, I need the three of them just as much, if not more. I sit here crying as it’s just hit me that all of the things you said are so true and profound. We’re going to ride this out, all the way to the White House. I would also encourage everyone to get out and do something for this campaign, because Hillary and others will start the nasty things, and Obama can use this victory as his springboard to continue raising money and, most importantly, winning more states.
Thanks for bringing all of this around in words for me. We are truly witnessing the dawning of a new day.

  3. I was at a watching party, and there was a brotha sittin next to me. A Iraq veteran, a pastor and a new father. Just to see his family and that young baby have an opprotunity that when his father, or when I was young, (like im old) thought was impossible come true. It was truly inspiring.

I didnt cry til i got home in time for his speech, but its something to see history happen. To see the impossible or improbable appear before you. Its truly something spiritual. I wasnt around for the huge moments that defined a generation of blacks, but I am grateful to be around for this one.

I want to thank SB for this post, and for making sure my optimism wasn’t blind, but still kept my hope alive.

I will be going to SC, and will be donating more money, and making more phone calls. Because the fierce urgency of now calls for it.

    LETS CHANGE THE WORLD!

    Turnip Posse For Life!

  4. Henry,

Your generous words of praise has touched me deeply. Thanks. I intend to go canvassing in South Carolina and contribute money. I would encourage others to do the same.

  5. Katie

I’m so happy that you’re so happy. I’m pretty impressed with your unabashed support. I’m lovin’ it. I think you’re right that we’re going to do it. Watch for NH and SC to go our way. Does anyone have any idea what’s going on in Nevada? No polls recently…

    Obama ’08…

  6. So go ahead and make me shatter my self-imposed New Year’s resolution of less blogging-related time online, SB. 😉 After hearing the news last night I just knew there was no way I could keep myself from coming over to your blog to see what your “always insightful” mind was going to throw our way. And wow, oh wow, did you ever put out a lot of food for thought–excellent entry, excellent entry, indeed! (Embarrassed to admit I hadn’t previously heard of Ida B. Wells-Barnett.)

While I fully realize what a momentous occasion this is and what a turning point I agree it will be for our country, I have to say that what excited me most about your post is to see YOU excited again! A short time back you blogged about your own frustrations and disillusionment with our system and our country pretty much breaking your spirit and leaving you without much motivation. This really bothered me since it’s so disappointing to see someone who CAN (and does) make a difference feel so shut down. It does my heart good to see through your writing today that SB is back with a vengeance. That’s going to make this a MUCH more interesting year politically, and otherwise. 😉 Take care.

I don’t know how anybody got through even part of that speech with a dry eye! This moment rocks the whole world. I work overseas a lot, and the impact of Obama will make a whole lot of people believe again, not just those of us here who lost hope, got cynical, and felt unable to rail against the system. He will inspire a generation worldwide to have hope, struggle again, aim high, and persevere. I’m with Skep in not fulling agreeing with all Obama says, but he’s undeniably insprirational, a force to be reckoned with, and will shake up a lot, if not all, of the entrenched interests that have a stranglehold in DC.

  8. Well, well; the only thing I’ll say here is that a brotha has never been able to achieve great things unless he had a strong sista, or a network of strong sistas surrounding him.

Barack Obama, despite certain periods of ineptitude, has managed to come out on top, because, as SB alluded to in his post, the brotha had strong sistas surrounding him: his wife and Oprah Winfrey.

I still remain skeptical because of his willingness to attack Pakistan, and keeping troops in Iraq until the end of 2013, if he’s elected, because positions like that make him Democrat-lite.

I’m not hating – just stating why I’m still skeptical about him.

Yet, I’m also proud that he’s representing in a big way; my fear is that he gets corrupted by the acquisition of power and behaves no better than his white GOP peers.

I’ve already said if he wins the whole enchilada, I will vote for him in the general. I just hope he has the good, or common sense to balance his ticket with someone like John Edwards or Chris Dodd.

Thanks for allowing my two cents on this, because while I rejoice at this sign of progress, I’m ambivilant about the brotha’s political position, so I hope you’ll allow me my skepticism until I see otherwise.

  9. jessica

Wow! What an amazing conversion. I have been praying. I have only been to this site a couple of times and have read the anti-Obama posts. This morning I wanted to check in to see your perspective. Beautiful! You have moved me.

  10. jessica

I read your post again and I must say that as a white woman who has been praying for the Obama moment since 2004- your voice added to this choir is so meaningful. Peace and love to you!

  11. Great post, and glad I stumbled upon your blog.

As someone watching the world through jaundiced eyes, I’ve got to say that Obama’s win made my day. Rock on!

  12. Political Junkie,

I feel you on the substance of your critique and will continue to sound off on points of disagreement without reservation, but I was blown away last night and am a newly minted supporter until the end. Hopefully, all y’all at Black Agenda Report can still respect a Skeptical Brotha, but for now, I BELIEVE.

  13. Stoic

Oh, really? “Crushes”? 37% vs. 30% vs. 29%. More like “eeks out narrow victory”. Maybe a little bit more than that but not crushes. Heh.

  14. stoic,

No, I mean crushes. As in the most formidable Democratic political machine in history. She came in third, behind John Edwards, who only had a fraction of her money. He needed 527 support to stay in the game. Both men out organized the wife of the most popular President in recent history, that’s historic and Obama crushed her.

    Accept it.

  15. Abdul Jabbar

Dude for the last year you have been SAVAGING Obama. You called him the “Black bourgoise fantasy”. Now you feel inspired??? What the *uck?? Now your jumping on the bandwagon?? Oh please….

  16. Abdul Jabbar,

My criticisms have been fact based and valid, but there is something to be said for the power of rhetoric, the emotional tug of a good speech, and proof of the staying power to prevent us from enduring Hillary.

He still doesn’t support reparations-Problem. He still equivocates on the Death Penalty-Problem. He still voted for the anti-labor Oman free trade agreement-Problem. I don’t ignore or dismiss anything I’ve said before. I’m dogmatic enough to mean what I say. However, this is as good as we’re gonna get and to prevent a Hillary Presidency, this is all there is and I won’t stand in his way. I want him to show and prove. I can deal now.

Finally, as long as we are content to allow the same form of predator capitalism to go unchecked globally, we are consciously participating in a bourgeois fantasy. I’ll enjoy it while it lasts. Call me what you want, but don’t be surprised if I delete it.

  17. SB,

I have been waiting for you. I was wondering when it would come from you, and now I understand why you never posted about South Carolina.

I swear to God, if the Obama camp could find a way to get a DVD of Michelle in Orangeburg, South Carolina to every Black family, not only would there be no question as to whom we’d be supporting, but also, we’d be out there, in the streets, doing our own voter registration drives. I finally got to listen to it about a week ago, and I was stunned.

I had heard Michelle before, you know that. I loved her long before, you know that. But, that speech was on another level too, and it was stunning.

When he pointed to her, and said YOU, YOU, I was like, here is this Black man honoring this Black woman for all the world to see. It was unreal.

Our fellow poster yogo said something months ago that I never forgot, because it was so truthful and raw:

Paraphrasing, yogo wrote that the true upending of White Supremacy in America would not be with the election of Barack Obama. It would be with the moment that Michelle Obama, a visibly dark, unmistakably Black woman: a self-proclaimed ‘ loud mouthed’ Black woman, steps through the FRONT door of the White House on the arm of the President.

Such an image is almost mind-shattering considering the history of the Black woman in America.

That she came in third – the most formidable Democratic Machine in 25 years?

SB, this was beautiful. I love it. It was worth the wait.

  18. As I watched the tallies come in,history was made,my prayers have been answered and the people of Iowa made that happen last night. Thank you Iowa for your confidence in Barack Obama!!!

  19. Cliff

“You said the time has come to tell the Lobbyists who think that thier money and thier influence, speak louder than our voices, that they don’t own this government, we do, and we are here to take it back.”

Really Though. Here is something that both blacks and whites are saying but wait a minute.

That is a powerful challenge that you just gave to yourself sir, and I really hope that God will bless you with the resistance you need when they come to you with their opportunities of powerful financial compensations. They will definitely test one who thinks he has the courage to challenge to the value of their wealth. Knowing their pattern, and being fully aware of their thoughts, they will probably say…

“YOU NEED to sell the general population of people out for a million dollars. Healthcare, Employment and the war in Iraq is not that important.”

    Obama: No Sir.

“YOU NEED to sell black community out for ten million dollars. Equal Employment, Educational Opportunities for African Americans, the notion of reparations for slavery, which really never existed, and our bankrolling of the incarceration and deaths of your people, our assistance with illegal drugs, and gang wars, to produce profit for us, is not that important.”

    Obama: HMMMM, No Sir.

“YOU NEED to sell all the people out for a hundred dollars. The issues all of the people is not that important, what is important is that we can finance you and your family for the rest of you life. We promise will continue to support your family once you are not here anymore. Our finance has no ending, we can even support your children’s children.”

Now here is where the true test of his words will become manifested, whether he internalized the strength to resist the Lobbyists.

  20. Obama’s speech was touching and that did it for me. I had to backup the DVR to record his historical speech. If he receives the nomination from his party, I will definitely volunteer my time.

  21. Abdul Jabbar

“unmistakably Black woman: a self-proclaimed ‘ loud mouthed’ Black woman,”

A good reason to consider maybe NOT voting for Obama…

We don’t need any kneck roliin’ “talk to the hand” attitude in the white house. Or in any house for that matter…

Michelle Obama is apealling but clearly has Obama’s testicles in a lock box. Sad. To bad we can’t have a black man who has a Black wife who adores her husband and speaks to his good side without letting people know that she calls him “stinky” and that she doesn’t undertsnad what all his “hype” is about.

Leave it to a Black woman to diminish the potentially first Black viable candidate in American history.
NO OTHER CANDIDATES WIFE HAS EVER talked about her husband with the irreverant disregard of Michelle Obama. It is emasculating to him as a future president and a perfect example of what is wrong the “corporate” “professional” modern Black woman.

Disrespect of the Black man as means to “take him down a notch.”

I hope her value doesn’t get diminshed by her desire to “put him in his place.” What a sad commentary on the Black womens treatment of her man. Would romney’s wife do that? Would HILLARY EVEN do that to bill?? No.. leave it to the “sista”

  22. Just speaking for myself, I’d much rather have Michelle with the keys to her man’s lock box than the health insurance lobby having them, or the Military Industrial Complex, or Big Pharma, or Merrill Lynch, or…

But let’s face it, if he’s raising the kinds of funds he has been, some of that is coming from the above suspects. Which leads to my continuing skepticism with this campaign. My exhiliration (ex-Hillary-ation) today has just as much to do with her failure than his success. So all I can do is hope we’re looking at a step in the right direction and not another stealth attack on the people that can least afford it. Literally.

She clearly adores him, and humanizes him..that is her purpose. When you have BS like ‘The Magic Negro’ going around, she had to say that he’s a talented and special Negro, but not a “Magic Negro”.

  24. candace

    Abdul Jabbar,

I too was/am a little concerned that Michelle Obama at times possibly emasculated Barack in public, but to say that she is irreverent towards him is a bit harsh don’t you think?

AJ, I’m a black woman and I do know that a lot of sisters can be domineering and at times difficult to deal with, but Michelle for the most part has been very supportive of Barack and she’s a doting WIFEY!! I do agree that the STINKY comment was out of line, but AJ, she’s new to this arena and will make a mistake or 2. However, to opine that she emasculates Barack is not totally accurate! According to Barack’s book, He’s winning most of those battles, and appears to be running things. Michelle may voice dissent, but Barack seems in the end to do his thing, and she gets on board!!

AJ, don’t you think that black men and black women all too often look quickly to find fault with one another rather than look to see the positive attributes in one another? Black-on-black relationships need a lot of work, but don’t you think that Barack & Michelle have an excellent foundation and a running start towards a good relationship?

I bet as this election process progresses, Michelle will tone down any negative comments about Barack, in fact, she already has!!!AJ, Black women can and do support their Black men(perhaps we need to refine our methods of love and support). Trust me, should Barack fall, it won’t be because of Michelle!!!

  25. Stoic

Oh, that’ll teach me to read things more carefully. Yeah, Hillary’s machine took a beat down alright. It’s one of the things (but not the only one) that pisses me off about her. Without Bill’s charisma it’s not quite so formidable.

  26. Rick

“God has moved and his hand is clearly on Barack Obama.” — SB

    AMEN to that.

Obama sort of remimds me of the Old Testament character, Joesph. When it became clear that Obama was running for President – a dream like Joesph’s that would have placed him in command over others – I wondered why so many of Obama’s “bothers” (and “sisters”) expressed so much vehement hatred against him.

Criticism went waaaaay beyond any political differences. It was personal. Many black people questioned his blackness, his masculinity, his name, his religion, his whole identity. I understand from my parents that Dr. King battled personal attacks (from his own kind) when he dared rise to challenge racial segregation.

As a black man who relates to Obama (mostly because I relate to his experience growing up as a child), I understand it must have hurt him to feel such rejection coming from his own people when you have the AUDACITY to dream a little dream — again like the biblical Joesph, whose very own brothers sold him into slavery.

Joesph ultimately rose to become second only to Pharoh Empire in the Egyptian Empire. And Obama? Heh, Heh, we’ll see…

A couple of things stand out to me. First, what others mean for bad, God uses for GOOD. Had not Joesph been sold into slavery, he would never have been in POSITION to become heir to pharoh’s empire.

SECOND, as I wrote on these very pages on April 4th, 2007:
“Thank the Lord Jesus Christ that such hate doesn’t matter in the end. If God is truly for someone, then that ALONE is greater than the entire world going against that same person.”
    https://skepticalbrotha.wordpress.com/2007/04/03/obamas-obscene-money-chase/#comments

With all due respect to the black women I admire who read this blog, Michelle and Oprah are both agents to a Higher Power. But they are not that power. God has a plan for this nation, and its people. And it’s bigger than Michelle, bigger than Oprah, bigger than Obama — all of which are being used for His larger purposes.

May all glory and honor go to God,
    Rick

I came to this site to hear how Black Americans are responding to Obamas crushing win over Hilary the monster Clinton . I am a white Republican who doesn’t agree with Obama on many issues but I am open minded. He does connect with people, and commands attention .Obama will be attacked by the Clintons and the liberal media smear machine just as the Republican candidates have been for years ,maybe Obama supporters will see the double standards . I say history was made the other night and most of the main stream media gave Hillary most of the coverage,it’s terrible but true. For Obama to be balanced he will have to appeal to black and white and all Americans. after all he is running for President of all Americans so give him a break if he at times he doesn’t seem black enough as some already accused him . I ‘m just trying to say how it is from a white perspective ,it’s good to hear all perspectives. If Obama does get the Dem. Nomination every one needs to be careful not to inject race into the equation because that will sink Obama Quickly .I know some will disagree but Obama has a tough balancing act on His run for president . Like one of the comments on this site God decides who will be our next leader regardless or race or Party. Good luck Obama and watch out for the Clintonistas

  28. SB,

You jumped onboard the bandwagon faster than Clint Eastwood could quick-draw his pistol.

Skeptical Brotha leaving behind his trademark cynicism? The jury will remain out on that one. But it wasn’t that long ago that you were throwing jabs at Obama (and so many others).

None of the candidates were really a choice for me. However, out of the line-up that was presented, I would have preferred to see John Edwards get the nomination. But the corporate media decided over a year ago that John Edwards would not be President.

The Obama/Clinton Show represented the biggest ratings draw and the biggest money maker for the networks, and therefore the media set the agenda for voters and decided who the “favorite” candidates were going to be. The media clearly decided (for the people) who the favorites were, and have spent the last 18 months bombarding the American public with coverage….herding the public in the direction of the media’s choosing.

Americans vote how they are told to vote….always have. This year will be no different. Like obedient sheep, Americans will participate in the Obama/Clinton made for TV Movie. I will watch the movie, but i’m not participating in the production.
I have never participated in an American election ceremony, and never will. But I will remain an avid observer.

Unlike you, my cynicism isn’t going anywhere. I’m probably the King of Cynicism. If anything, this election cycle is (so far) only making me more disgusted with the political system, and the electoral process in particular. This election is a sham to me…..as all recent elections have been. The media has more influence in choosing Presidents than voters do. THAT IS A PROBLEM.

In my case, John Edwards is (or “was” now…because he’ll be done here pretty soon) …but he was the only candidate with a message that resonated with me. He was the only candidate with poverty as a focus of his platform. He was the only candidate with Hurricane Katrina as a part of his platform…and he had a plan for Katrina… (how many of the other candidates went down to volunteer numerous times…when the cameras were not there?). He was the only candidate with a focus on the working poor… And IMO, he would probably be more electable in a General Election. He’s a Southern Democrat…just what the Democratic Party needs for a nominee. It’s no coincidence that the last 2 Democratic Presidents were Southern Democrats… the last 3 if you count Gore. lol.

He’s not the perfect candidate… But he had “great” President potential… almost Kennedy-esqe (not that i’m a big fan of Kennedy).
But Black folks (as a whole)… are some of the most loyal Sheep in the electorate…. so it’s no surprise that folks would vote for someone who looks like them, but has not necessarily articulated a plan or platform that best represents their interests.

To me, Obama seems to be more along the lines of an elitist corporate Democrat…. willing to negotiate with entrenched corporate interests….and “hope” that they come to their senses….rather than someone who will fight his ass off for my best interests (at least some of my interests) as a Black man struggling in the working class…and stuck in the working class. His stump speeches and his message never really caught on for me. And being staunchly independent, I had no interest in jumping on his bandwagon just because he was Black. That whole idea is insulting to me…. I hate when people bring this up… assuming, in a roundabout way, that I should automatically back the man because of our shared skin pigment.

I recall Obama saying just last week at a rally that he helped put together legislation that prevented Senators from accepting meals from lobbyists… But who cares about a f—-ing meal when lobbyists are still buying members of Congress and literally writing the legislation. K Street is as strong as ever. In other words, he’s too superficial in his challenge of the Washington DC culture and corporate control of our government. He should be talking about closing K Street down… PERIOD. These lobbyists have all sorts of special access to elected officials…both in Congress and the White House. Yet the citizens have zero access. Ironically… the original meaning of “lobbyist” referred to a time when the average citizen would go to Congress to lobby their elected officials. Access was practically open at that time. Try reaching your elected official today. Good luck! Good luck even getting a response to a letter. If you are lucky…. IF you are lucky, you will get a form letter back, thanking you for your effort to contact Sen. or Congressman Joe Blow.

But the test now for Obama will be winning a General Election. That’s the true test… winning purple States. He will need more than “hope” and a smile to overcome the brutal beating that the Republican attack machine & Conservative corporate media is about to put on him. AND FOLKS… THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE PRETTY…. IT WILL NOT BE FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. I can’t stress that enough.

People say…well he won in 2 White States… well that was a Caucus and Primary, with mostly folks from his own Party participating. That will not necessarily translate into success in a General Election….even with some support from independents.

But if he wins the nomination… I will support him. Because the alternative is just unthinkable. Two of the Republi-CON candidates- Romney and Huckabee- want to turn the State into an Imperialist Theocracy, and the other two top candidates- Giuliani and McCain- are warmongering lunatics who will give us the Bush+ Plan… The same Bush administration policies on steroids. It will essentially be an extension of BushCo. Both McCain and Giuliani have the most prowar military and foreign policy teams and they have both expressed an interest in taking the nation into more wars. John McCain is the biggest warhawk in the U.S. Senate…has been for many years.

The problem with Obama is that I just don’t think he can beat a top Republican in a General Election. If McCain gets the nod… Obama will be in trouble.
And he could also struggle with any of the others.

The Republicans see Obama as the most beatable Democrat.

At any rate… this year will be interesting on many levels.

SB: I feel your hope rising. But it’s my nature to be cynical about this. First, Iowa (doesn’t mean much). New Hampshire, only a little more. Nevada, South Carolina? Could be helpful, but it’s hard to see how they’re both going to swing BO’s way.

And then we have the unprecendented Super-Duper Tuesday (Feb 5th–less than one month away.) On this day, 24 states (representating an overwhelmingly large part of the electorate, including both California and New York) will have their primaries.

It takes a lot of money to swing a big stick on Super-Duper Tuesday. And Hillary Clinton has got that kind of money.

She will definitely be considered a very viable candidate at least until then (and probably well beyond–even until the convention) even if she doesn’t beat BO in the early primaries.

While I have long wanted to keep hope alive, it’s been dead in me for many, many years.

Keep on bein’ a skeptical brotha, my brotha.

Skeptical Brotha – Just discovered your “blog” while researching the events surrounding Obama’s dis-invatation of Rev Wright to Obama’s Presidential Announcement. Glad you are comin ’round to Obama, but please remain Skeptical, Bro.

I’ve been on Obama’s side ever since his speech at the DNC in 2004. As soon as he finished speaking I went online and Googled him (I think for myself). What I discovered over the next few days of studying was that this was a man who I could support for POTUS. As I have voted for numerous white candidates for POTUS since 1972 (McGovern, Carter, Mondale, Clinton, Gore, Kerry) I knew that I would have no more problem voting for him than I did for any of them. But I also realized that there would be many of my brothas and sistas who would apply a “double-standard” to Barack, making it highly improbable, IMHO, for him to win the black vote. After all, he is not a “race man”, which some blacks consider to be the sine qua non of a black candidate

Take for instance the “blackagenda” folks. They never cease to denigrate Obama. I was just at their site and they have a drawing of Obama that is DOWNRIGHT deragatory. Note also how in the post from politicaljunkie (s)he implies that the only reason Barck won Iowa is because of Michelle and Oprah. But would (s)he say the same about a white man? Doubt it. Why? Because many blacks can see the white man as the boss of white people, but are incapable of giving a black man the same respect.

Don’t get me wrong. Michelle is “all that, and a bag of chips”. Man, I love that women! I would vote for her for POTUS in a New York second! But lets keep it real – Barack is the REAL DEAL.

So you have a problem with Obama because he would “attack” Pakistan? Besides the fact that this is a myth-representation of his “If we have actionable intelligence as to the location of Al-Qeda forces in Pakistan, and the Pakistani government cannot or will not act, we will”, I notice that at the NH debate last Saturday (01/05/07), Edwards, Clinton and even Richardson now agree with him on this. So now who are you gonna vote for? Kucinich? (love him too!).

Though I also love Edwards, and think he’ll make a great AG in an Obama administration, he was an Iraqi war-monger. Thats right, all you Edwardians, Edwards did more than just vote Yea on the AUMF-Iraq; he was a co-sponsor of the Resolution and joined Bush in LYING us into war. Just check out his Jefferson-Jackson Dinner speech from October 2002.
    http://www.gwu.edu/~action/2004/edwards/edw101802sp.html

Yet, many blacks who support Edwards overlook this fact, while degrading Obama for ANY reason. BTW, during the above mentioned speech, Edwards did not utter the word “poverty” even once. Yet during his October 2002 ANTI-iraqi war speech, Obama mentioned “poverty” TWICE.

    http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Barack_Obama%27s_Iraq_Speech?oldid=481343

Being concerned with the issue of poverty is not something new to Obama, its not just a campaign slogan, as it seems to be for Edwards. It goes back to his days as a grassroots community organizer in inner-city Chicago. And the skills he honed during this EXPERIENCE is the foundation upon which he built the ground-game that led to his success in Iowa. Or is giving a black man credit for competancy a bit too unrealistic for you?

So Obama is not Anti-Death penalty enough for you? Well how bout the fact that Hillary thinks Obama is too soft on all the people her and her husband helped to incarcerate via the crack-cocaine laws? Funny how many anti-death penalty advocates don’t seem to have a problem with all the “uncle tommy guns” who have levied the death penalty on TENS of thousands of black people over the last 25 years. As many of these “klansmen-in-blackface” will soon be returning to our communities, whatcha gonna do when they come gunnin for you? As someone who spent six years of his life in the early 1990’s working in an alternative-to-incarceration program, I know the difference between someone who sold a bag of crack to an undacova and a self-hating sociopath, so please don’t waste time tryin to “tom” me on this.

So you’re concerned bout all the money behind Obama? What bout Edwards $55 MILLION earned primarily through his conections with hedge funds? Oh, thats right. Edwrads is a white man, so he gets a pass. Let’s just overlook the fact that Obama has more small donors than all the other candidates combined, including that red-neck Ron Paul. The fact that Obama has people who know how to handle lagre sums of money, some of them corporate managers, in charge of his “war-chest” is just smart. At least we don’t have to be concerned that he has some hidden bimbo on the payroll.

Think for yourself! Do your own research! To hell with Political Correctness, be it black, white or whatever! Stop checking to see if your opin is in line with the current orthodoxy. Be logically consistant. If you’re willing to cut slack for a white person in order to vote for them (sista soulja, lani guinier), damnit, cut the same slack for a person of colour.

But, above all – Remain Skeptical!

    Go Bama! Roll Tide!

THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AWAITS SENATOR OBAMA’S LEADERSHIP ON THIS US JUDICIAL INJUSTICE ???

LETS ALL HOPE OUR INTERNATIONAL MEDIA FRIENDS ALSO SHOW AN INTEREST IN REPORTING ON THIS AMERICAN HORROR FACING THESE (TENS OF THOUSANDS) FORGOTTEN AND TRAPPED POORER AMERICANS, AND HOW THIS POSSIBLE FUTURE PRESIDENTIAL CONTENDER HANDLES THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE FACING AMERICA’S LATINO AND BLACK AMERICAN COMMUNITIES ????

WITH 80% OF THE BLACK AMERICAN VOTERS SAYING THEY SUPPORT SENATOR OBAMA IN THIS PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, IT IS ONLY FAIR FOR EVERYONE TO KNOW PRIOR BEING ELECTED OUR NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES HOW THIS DEMOCRATIC SENATOR TRULY FEELS ABOUT THIS AMERICAN JUDICIAL HORROR CONTINUING TO INFLICT GRAVE HARM ON THE BLACK AMERICAN FAMILIES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES NATIONWIDE ??????

****WHEN THE US INNOCENT WERE ABANDONED BY THE GUILTY ****
The prison experts have reported that there are 100,000 innocent Americans currently being falsely imprisoned along with the 2,300,000 total US prison population nationwide.
Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials, they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.

This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.

This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges!!

Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice!

For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.

It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayers $$.
