Kwame Kilpatrick gets busted

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, lied about their relationship last summer during a police whistle-blower trial that has cost the cash-strapped city more than $9 million, according to records obtained by the Free Press.

The false testimony potentially exposes them to perjury charges.

Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty denied in August testimony that they had a sexual relationship. But a series of text messages shows they engaged in romantic banter as well as planned and recounted sexual liaisons.

The text messages are also at odds with the pair’s testimony that they did not fire Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown, who later sued, in 2003. Texts show Christine Beatty recalling the “decision we made to fire Gary Brown.”

The Kilpatrick-Christine Beatty relationship and Gary Brown’s dismissal are central to the whistle-blower suit filed by Brown and Harold Nelthrope.

The two former police officers accuse Kwame Kilpatrick of retaliating against them because of their roles in an internal investigation of the mayor’s security team — a probe that potentially could have exposed his affair with Beatty.

The newspaper examined nearly 14,000 text messages on Christine Beatty’s city-issued phone. The exchanges cover two months each in 2002-2003.

The text messages cover a range of issues, from the daily minutiae of city business to political gossip to the latest doings on American Idol. Kilpatrick, who is married, and Beatty, both 37, exchanged personal messages almost daily, including romantic notes like this one from October 3, 2002 …

Kilpatrick: “I’m madly in love with you.”
Beatty: “I hope you feel that way for a long time. In case you haven’t noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!”

Other texts contain sexual content, like this April 8, 2003, exchange:

Beatty: “And, did you miss me, sexually?”
Kilpatrick: “Hell yeah! You couldn’t tell. I want some more.”

The city has tried since 2004 to keep the text messages under wraps.  It fought in court to keep them from being provided to the legal team for the former cops and went to court this month in an effort to kill a subpeona issued in a Free Press suit to learn more about the settlement.

If Kilpatrick and Beatty are found to have committed perjury, they could face up to 15 years in prison under state law.

  1. He BARELY got back in the last election. I don’t feel sorry for him. He got busted and no better for him.

Um, don’t text message…..cheat the old -fashioned way…LOL

Like Detroit has 9 million to spare for his foolishness.

  2. john in california

L.A., San Francisco, New York, now Detroit – big city mayors all seem to have some zipper problems.

This hurts and ticks you off at the same time. There’s carnage all over the place: the people he screwed over to cover his butt; the people of Detroit; wife; children; mothers and family members; pastor; friends; black top executives, and potential black top executives, in public and private sectors; FAMU ….

Granted, the perjury and obstruction case is in allegation stages, but the evidence looks strong. It’s sad, and I hope, if the allegations are true, the brother gains some humility and handles this with some grace – whatever grace looks like in a situation like this. Praying for the wife, children, mother, Detroit, and … Kwame, too. UUUhhhh!

I’m from Detroit. Black voters defend Kilpatrick by and large because for them, Kilpatrick’s woes are symbolic of a black man being “lynched” by the local, racist white media….

    Caged Lion,

Maybe that was not well-written. It’s not that he screwed FAMU. As an HBCU supporter and zealot, Mayor Kilpatrick’s alleged crimes don’t taint my view of FAMU, but because he is so close to the school, the school ends up sometimes getting a bad rap.

The allegations and his connections to FAMU shouldn’t taint anyone’s view, but it will. Ya dig what I’m sayin’?

  6. Time to send out another GTMG (Get That Money Girl) tool kit to Kwame’s wife. Mayor or not, I can’t homegirl staying in the marriage after this public exposure and humiliation of her husband.

We knew something was up when he got busted for partying in Vegas on the Detroit City Credit Card, and having strip parties in the Mayor’s mansion.

  7. Chesapeake, I see. I’m a FAMU alum, and didn’t realize he had such close ties to my school.

FAMU has been going through many scandals in the last 5-6 years, and I get wary at more bad news.

I know what you mean, Caged Lion. Y’all good, though. I’m reading some good news on the admin front! Sorry, SB, to go off subject. I’m back on, now ….

Not saying that he was in anyway right about the predicament that he has gotten himself into.Black elected officials have to be fools to not think that they are not under a microscope.Put aside Mayor Kilpatrick criminal stupity for a moment.

If he is under this depth of scrutiny then we all can fall victim to it.This first of all bring bare right to privacy issues, who would even think that they could even subpeona your, mine, and our text transcript, and to what end are they being saved. Can you self incrimanate yourself if you don’t know you are giving up that right.Who of us ,if all of our conversation in the run of doing what a Black man has to do to survive in this day and age were scutinized would come up squeeky clean without blemish. It seems even a awfully lofty power to obtain such evidence before it was even known if it would be admisable.

We also seem to forget that the front runner in this presidential race husband was impeached for this very same thing as we judge Kwame for from a much loftier position. He also was accused of what really amounts to molestation several times, and I never heard anyone mentioning a day of jail time.We thought it was cool.I think lying to congress and the entire country is a bit more severe than lying to local court. So before we cast stones, let think about our own closet.Better yet the national scandal that is running for President.Put that in your gun Obama, you can be sure the Republicans will.

  10. ha ha ha ha ha!

i hope there’s someone living in Detroit who can explain how exactly

the media forced the married Kwame to have sex with his chief of staff?

Also I guess the media forced him to lie about it under oath too?

Why can’t people just say he screwed up big time and now he has to be an sdult and accept the consequences?

Is Kwame a victim of the adage:

Black mothers spoil their sons but raise their sons

    or what?

    Question:

Regardless of what text messages indicate, can there really be a ‘consensual’ relationship between the Mayor and his Chief of Staff?

Isn’t that like a ‘consensual’ relationship between a guard and an inmate?

What happens to the Chief of Staff when she no longer wants to ‘do’ the Mayor? Does the Chief lose her job?

    Do see my point?
